Vermaelen expects tough test against City

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen expects his side’s clash against Manchester City to be a ‘tight’ affair.

Arsene Wenger’s men have been in indifferent form this season and find themselves in sixth in the English Premier League.

But they would be right back in contention for a Champions League spot with wins against City on Sunday and a victory over Chelsea.

“Looking back at the last few years, it’s always a tight game when they come to Emirates Stadium and I suspect it will be similar on Sunday afternoon,” Vermaelen wrote in Arsenal’s matchday programme.

“We played well against them here last season though, winning 1-0 and having the chances to score three or four, and can also be encouraged by our draw up there a few months ago.

“They have some great players and are champions for a reason, but we’re confident we can get the result we need to set us up nicely for the next few weeks.

“A glance at the fixture list shows opponents like Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich coming up in the next few weeks.

“These are games for fans and players to savour, of course, but we’ll treat each one in the same way. There is a lot to play for, and plenty of reason to be excited.”

The two sides drew 1-1 when Arsenal travelled to Manchester earlier in the season, with Laurent Koscielny cancelling out Joleon Lescott’s goal with a late equaliser.
