AZ captain Nick Viergever has signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2015.

Viergever had been linked with a move to PSV Eindhoven but has now secured his future at AZ.

He is expected to move from the central defence to left-back following the arrival of close-season recruits Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Jan Wuytens.

The 23-year-old skipper admitted that he had been looking to leave the AFAS Stadion, but was philosophical about his decision to remain with AZ.

“The desired clubs did not come for me,” he told the club’s official website.

“Then it’s a choice, either to remain at AZ or move abroad.

“My feeling is that this is best. I want to develop myself.

“That I can do at AZ. That it is now at left-back, which is fine by me.”
