Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova is to receive further treatment for cancer in New York this week.
The 44-year-old was due to have the ‘pioneering treatment’ at the end of the season but it has been brought forward with Barcelona having already secured La Liga title with three games remaining.
He spent two months in New York earlier in the year to receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment, after having two bouts of surgery on his parotid gland in Spain in the last 18 months.
Vilanova had follow-up tests in America two-weeks ago and will be away from Barcelona for five days for his latest trip.
“Tito Vilanova has confirmed at a press conference that he will have further treatment for cancer next week in New York,” Barcelona said on their website.
“The pioneering treatment has been developed at a specialised centre and is proving particularly effective.
“It was originally planned for this summer but as Barca has now clinched the league title it has been advanced to next week. Tito Vilanova will be away from Barcelona from Monday to Friday.”
Barcelona face Real Valladolid on Sunday, before they face Espanyol and Malaga to round off their campaign.
