Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has claimed he would be “extremely surprised” if Gareth Bale left the club at the end of the season.

The Welshman has been in outstanding form for the London club this term, scoring 19 goals in 29 league appearances to lead his side’s charge for a top-four finish.

Subsequently, it has been suggested the Wales international would consider a departure from White Hart Lane should Tottenham fail in their bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

But, despite the player being repeatedly linked with Real Madrid, Villas-Boas expects Bale to stay put.

“The information that I have from the club, which was mistakenly written about last week, is that the player is here to remain, independent of the objectives of Champions League qualification being achieved or not,” he said.

“I would be extremely surprised if he left.”

Over the last week, Bale has received Player of the Year awards from both the Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Writers’ Association.

The winger will hope to help Tottenham keep their European dream alive when they take on Southampton on Saturday.
