Villas-Boas supports troubled Terry

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has thrown his support behind captain John Terry after news he will face charges over alleged racial abuse.

The defender allegedly made racist remarks towards Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during Chelsea’s 1-0 loss in the English Premier League clash at Loftus Road on October 23.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed on Wednesday Terry would face charges, but Villas-Boas backed the 31-year-old and his character.

“I will be fully supportive of John Terry whatever the outcome of the situation. He has my full support, he has the club’s full support,” the Portuguese manager said.

“He represents this club to a maximum level, and we are very grateful to have a player of his quality in our team, and for what he represents in terms of history and achievements in the club.”

“We know his human values and his personality, for me they are never in doubt. So I will fully support whatever the outcome of the decisions.”

According to Villas-Boas, Terry will definitely take his place for Chelsea when they meet Tottenham in their derby clash on Thursday.

The former Porto boss said the clash at White Hart Lane was crucial for his team, with Harry Redknapp’s side sitting two points ahead of them with a game in hand.

“I am sure that it is an important game in the season, again within the December fixtures that we have been speaking about,” Villas-Boas said.

“They are very important for the outcome of maybe what happens at the end of the season. So with Tottenham with a game in hand it is important for us to try and get something out of it.”

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Gary Cahill during the January transfer window, with Bolton potentially cashing in on the defender, whose contract expires in June.

Villas-Boas said he was interested in Cahill, and was aware of the England international’s contract situation.

“We are aware of Gary’s contractual situation. His talent is never in question. He is an interesting player of course for the club,” Villas-Boas said.

“You know that we have made a decision this season regarding the central defenders. Alex has handed in a transfer request but we haven’t decided yet on what we are going to do with the Alex situation.”

“So we will have to let the transfer market open, and then make the wisest of decisions, be it with Alex or be it with Cahill or with other central defenders that are available.”
