Waghorn opts for Derby County

Derby County are closing in on the signing of Martyn Waghorn from Championship rivals Ipswich Town, according to Sky Sports.

The twenty-eight-year old had also been linked with a move to Middlesbrough but has opted to join up with Frank Lampard’s side, who opened the season with a come-from-behind victory at Reading on Friday evening.

Meanwhile Waghorn wasn’t named in Ipswich’s squad as they drew 2-2 with newly promoted Blackburn Rovers.

Having signed from Rangers just twelve months ago, Waghorn racked up forty-six appearances in all competitions for the Tractor Boys last season, scoring sixteen goals.

Prior to his move north of the border he spent time with Wigan Athletic and Leicester City and was named the Foxes Player of the Year in 2010, while he has also had loan spells with Charlton Athletic, Hull City and Millwall.

Internationally he won five caps for England’s U21s between 2011 and 2012, scoring twice.
