Walcott: Competition for places key to Arsenal´s form

Theo Walcott believes that competition for places is the reason for Arsenal’s fantastic run of form, with Arsene Wenger’s men now level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City.

England winger Walcott was on target twice on Saturday as Arsenal, who were reduced to 10 men when Granit Xhaka was sent off midway through the second half, claimed a sixth successive league win with a 3-2 triumph over Swansea City.

And the 27-year-old was quick to cite Arsenal’s quality squad as pivotal in their success so far this term, claiming that Wenger’s side are capable of challenging for the title.

“It’s a great achievement [six straight wins],” he told the club’s official website. “I think we tend to actually start very poorly in the Premier League.

“This year we have obviously had a few additions and they’ve settled in really well, and you can see that. It’s not just the starting XI, it’s the whole squad – 25 of us that are working hard, day in and day out. You can tell that on the pitch because the passion is there.

“There’s always been competition for places when you’re at such a big club. It gets the best out of everyone but when you’re called upon you need to be able to make the difference.

“Everyone’s ready for a very tight Premier League. You can’t really call it now but all we’ve got to do is just control ourselves.

“That’s all we can do, keep on doing that and we’ll be fine I’m sure.”

Next up for Arsenal is a home tie against Ludogorets in the Champions League, before hosting Middlesbrough in their next league game.
