Walker: England had no plan B at Euro 2016

Kyle Walker is confident England have developed a plan B since their Euro 2016 disaster that should serve them well in World Cup qualification.

England struggled under Roy Hodgson during the championships in France with one win in their three group games, and their time in the knockout stages was short-lived.

Despite being huge favourites to beat Iceland, the Three Lions slipped to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat in Nice.

Ahead of their second Group F qualifier with Malta, Walker believes things have changed within the England camp and they now have more options to help break teams down.

“I thought probably in the summer we didn’t have a different plan,” he told a media conference.

“It was, ‘We are going to play this way’ and if it didn’t work we didn’t really know what to do.

“But I feel for the Malta game we’ve got different dimensions now, we’ve spoken about it in depth that if something is not working we need to go to this plan so hopefully us as players on the pitch need to take control of that.

“If we don’t find it is working we need to step in and put our authority on it.

“We have to be patient, it’s not about rushing it because as soon you rush it, you start making mistakes and then there’s more pressure on you.

“If we just keep calm, stick to what we believe in and trust the players around us then I’m sure we’ll be fine on the night.”
