Warnock: Ferdinand is our defensive rock

Queens Park Rangers boss Neil Warnock has backed his defender Anton Ferdinand to shrug off the drama of his race row with John Terry.

Terry is alleged to have racially abused Ferdinand during QPR’s 1-0 win over Chelsea at Loftus Road on October 23, with the FA and London Police launching inquiries into the matter.

Despite the media glare on the issue, Warnock said he was confident 26-year-old Ferdinand would be on his game when QPR welcome league leaders Manchester City to Loftus Road on Saturday.

“I read a couple of papers that said he (Ferdinand) had all the world on his shoulders, but I didn’t see that at all,” Warnock said.

“I suppose that’s just tabloids saying what they want to say. I thought he was man of the match, I thought he was outstanding. I think he has been all season.”

“He’s just concentrating on the football side and at becoming a better defender.”

“I think over the last few years he’s had his moments and lapses, but we’re getting him to try and be consistent, and touch wood, I think he’s been as consistent as we could ask for, and he’s been a rock in the defence.”

Warnock said his team are fully focused on Saturday’s game against Roberto Mancini’s side, but the manager was in no doubt as to the size of the challenge awaiting his men.

“Whatever side we put out we’re looking forward to the game, it’s a fabulous opportunity for us to play against the best team in the country, one of the best teams in the world in fact,” Warnock said.

“We have to start the way we played in the second half at Tottenham.”

“If we play like we did in the 6-0 at Fulham or when Bolton beat us 4-0 at home, City could end up getting double figures.”
