Wary Carrick urges no relaxing

Midfielder Michael Carrick is keen to avoid complacency after Manchester United overtook rivals City at the top of the table.

The Red Devils eased to a 2-0 win at home to West Brom on Sunday while Roberto Mancini’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Swansea, but the former Tottenham man insists that United still have a number of tough fixtures remaining.

“There is no hiding the fact that it is nice to be top of the league,” Carrick told The Sun.

“This is a big week for us but I think we’ll be saying that for the rest of the season.”

“Wolves (in next Premier League fixture) has been a tough place to go over the last few years. It has been hard for us down there, so we are not taking anything for granted.”

“We are top of the league at the moment but we still have to pick up enough points between now and the end.”

Carrick’s team-mate Danny Welbeck has also reiterated the need for the Old Trafford outfit to maintain their excellent league form by bagging as many points as possible.

“I think we’ll get confidence from our recent results but we know there is no room for complacency at all,” Welbeck said.

“We’re getting to the end of the season and winning is vital. We need to get as many points as possible.”

“We are just focusing on ourselves and knowing the next match is always the most important. You can’t afford to slip up at any point, so it’s always the next game that’s on my mind.”
