We have to improve – Lambert

Paul Lambert confessed that Aston Villa did not deserve anything from their 3-0 Premier League defeat at Everton.

Villa have now lost four straight top-flight matches, conceding 11 without scoring themselves since a 1-0 victory over Liverpool last month.

Goals from Phil Jagielka, Romelu Lukaku and Seamus Coleman sealed Everton’s first home Premier League win of the season on Saturday, and Lambert admitted his team were always second best.

“I don’t think we deserved anything from the game,” the 45-year-old said.

“I think we started slow and that’s not like us. Normally we’re out of the traps pretty quickly.

“This is the first time I’ve felt in the run of games we’ve had that we haven’t really justified ourselves by playing the way we normally play.”

Lambert went on to lament the ease with which Everton were able to score.

“Their goals were poor form our point of view,” he continued.

“For the first goal the cross had to be stopped, and Brad [Guzan] thinks he should’ve saved the second.

“The third goal is a ridiculous goal to concede.

“I thought [Tom] Cleverley was outstanding along with [Alan] Hutton – but that’s not enough to win a game.

“Too many players were off it today but we’re a lot better than what we showed.”
