Last month reports surfaced that Arsenal manager might make a move for Xabi Alonso, however those reports quickly faded. Now, it seems that a deal could be close to completion as Liverpool are desperate to raise enough money to finance the Gareth Barry deal.
The Daily Star reports that Arsenal hope to tie up a cut-price deal for Alonso in the next few days after Wenger failed in his attempt to hijack Liverpool’s bid for Barry.
“I don’t know if Gareth Barry will leave Aston Villa. At the moment I am not on this case. I like Gareth Barry – and I like two or three other players. I don’t speak about names,” said Wenger according to the same report.
The Arsenal fans are unhappy with the quality of midfielders available to Wenger at the moment, if certain football forums are anything to go by, but all that might change should Wenger decide to splash the £12 million required to prise Alonso from Liverpool.
