Wenger wanted Welbeck on loan

The Daily Star understands that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he would have rather taken Danny Welbeck on loan from Manchester United, rather than pay £16m to secure his services on a permanent basis.

Tottenham Hotspur were also linked with a move for the 23 year old, who scored both goals for England in their 2-0 victory over Switzerland on Monday evening.

They were attempting to sign Welbeck on a temporary deal with a view to a permanent move, and Wenger was keen to do similar business before eventually agreeing on a figure with Louis van Gaal’s side, who themselves brought in Colombia striker Radamel Falcao on deadline day.

He is now set to make his debut for the Gunners as they host Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, and can be backed at a price of 6/1 to get the first goal of the game.
