Werder Bremen have won the German Super Cup, beating Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg at its own Volkswagen Arena.

Per Mertesacker put DFB-Pokal winners ahead on 21 minutes but had his goal cancelled out by Grafite in the 67th.

The away side went on to take the first trophy of the season though, as Clemens Fritz made it 1-2 with nine minutes to go.

Wolfsburg substitute Daniel Baier was red-carded just before full time.

Werder won the Super Cup three times before. The match wasn’t played from 1997 to 2007, to return as unofficial event in 2008.
