Who should win this year’s Ballon d’Or?

Cristiano Ronaldo

According to Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo deserves this year’s Ballon d’Or.

The Portuguese international bagged 46 goals and 12 assists in 38 league games for Los Blancos in 2011-12, and added 10 goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League appearances.

More importantly, Ronaldo was the best player on the best La Liga team of all-time.

In 2011-12, Real Madrid became the only club in the history of the Spanish Primera to tally 100 points in a single season.

Los Blancos also set the record for most away points in a season (50), most points in the second half of a season (53) and most league goals scored in a season.

In short, Ronaldo fully deserves to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

With that said, some may argue that Lionel Messi, who scored 50 goals in La Liga this season, deserves to win football’s most prestigious individual award yet again.

Jose Mourinho begs to differ.

“Cristiano has to be the Ballon d’Or winner, not because he was the top scorer, which he already was last season, but because his goals won the league,” the Real Madrid boss told SIC.

“Messi scored 50 goals that have not been worth anything, just as Cristiano scored 42 last season that were not worth anything.

“Cristiano has not been able to win the top scorer award and I think that should now be offset by the Ballon d’Or.”

‘Second-tier Candidates’

Robin van Persie: The Dutch striker enjoyed his best season in professional football in 2011-12, tallying 38 goals and 10 assists for club and country. In addition, he led Arsenal to a third-place finish after a dismal start to the campaign. Had Arsenal won the English Premier League, Van Persie may have been “right there” with Ronaldo and Messi, but that was never really going to happen.

Mario Gomez: Gomez was on cracking form for Bayern Munich all season long. He finished 2011-12 with 48 goals and five assists for club and county, including 12 Champions League strikes. Even if Bayern Munich win the UCL, Gomez will probably not win the award even though he may deserve it.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Quietly, but surely, Ibra put together a sensational campaign with AC Milan. Although Zlatan failed to win the league title for the first time since the 2003-04 season, he still managed to seal a second place finish for the Rossoneri. Oh and by the way, he registered 28 goals and six assists in 32 Serie A appearances.

All things considered, Cristiano Ronaldo should win this year’s Ballon d’Or despite Real Madrid’s failure to win the Champions League. It’s as simple as that to be honest.

The real man is CR7. He has really don well 4 HIMSELF & RM. So he deserves it. There is no doubt about it.

  2. Big Time C says:

I dont understand you guys saying Messi has no silverware this season? How about the spanish super cup, UEFA super cup, Club World Cup, and soon to be Kings Cup. thats 4 trophies out of 6, not a bad haul for a season. Add to that all the records that Messi broke this year. While Ronaldo has become more of a team player, he is still way short of Messi. Messi first player to win 4 Balon d’or in a row

  3. Stoooped says:

Both players are good. But you guys seem to forget that Madrid just won 1 clasico and 1 title, Barca won 3 titles this season and Messi was essential in winning the previous Clasicos. Both are phenomenal players and both deserve this award. They both failed to impress in the Champions League semi final in their respective matches but no one can’t deny they’re still good. People just like to hate these players because of their personalities, success, etc.

  4. SIMW says:

Stoooped, Messi was only essential in one of the Classico’s… that being the match in early january… Besides that, despite the losses, Ronaldo has completely out played Messi and completely deserves the Ballon D’or this year… Messi should not have won it in 2010 and hopefully will not steal another from Ronaldo this year. I’m referring to Messi winning in 2010 over Snjeider.

  5. cloud says:

.. these trophies: UEFA SUPER CUP, Club World Cup and Spanish Super Cup aren’t that important. Those are just one-offs.

.. and besides it’s as if Messi is miles away in the goal tally. he’s only 4 goals ahead in La Liga and essentially 6 goals ahead in the overall standings, i’m discounting his goals from the Club World Cup and the Super Cups.

@SIMW, Wesley had a Treble and was a Finalists in the World Cup and wasn’t even nominated as Best Player of the year. Judges and coaches are indeed blind.

  6. Mardon says:

    SIMW

One correction – Messi was decisive in all El Classicos this season except the last one. When under pressure from defenders, he created the passes which were decisive in the first legs of La Liga and Cope Del Rey both at Bernabeo. Plus, Messi’s debatable win in 2010 does not make CR7 any favorite this year.

  7. Oybek says:

Cheers back, Hayotjon. Good job with such comprehensive comment and sound arguments!

Cloud, just remembered that you have always called for objective, unbaised and NOT one-sided arguments, right? (it’s just crazy to discuss with people who are one-sided.) Let me refer you to something:

On May 18, your comment read “.. and on defense about Jose, yeah, he doesn’t know what he’s doing; he only won in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain. He belongs to the group of lamest coaches like Sir Alex, Fabio Capello, Carlo Ancelloti and Pep Guardiola.”

On May 19, your another comment read ” me, as a Madridista I admire Pep Guardiola, being his first taste of senior coaching and he’s made success upon success.”

I am simply confused which is it, I mean, where you were more multi-sided?

  9. loken says:

bullshit mourhino always side on ronaldo only la liga nothing nevevere ever commpare with messi.he is no 1 he deserve ballon this year not ronaldo.look chelsea drogba won champion league and fa cup he is better than ronaldo.
did mourhino win champion league at chelsea no roberto di mato did this now he is 110%better than stupid mourhino………………………….

  10. don says:

@Behruz: hats off PAL, do you know you just broke the record of the best loyal and generous and true football and barca and Messi fan coz of your honest IQ coz b4 that i thought it was only me who appreciates all these stuffs in real means and i honestly give you the trophy for such a hard task and this clean sheet provided by you to us and the rest of the world and especially for blind fans as cloud and some other funny and Brady etc rats.
Now guys and author and rest of the critics just come to papa, papa gives you all the rest of clarification, but first this author guy i dont know who you are but baby either you are jose’s man or RM or CR7 fan or some rat i dont know what ??
either you wanna stretch this thing to make ypur column popular with the help of such controversial comments and stretch it to certain heights or it might be a secret public poll, i dont know what again ??
But writing a column and self answering it in such a controversial manner reflexes your way of justification. CR7 as every body knows is nowhere nearer to Messi. And if you are a true writer and honest as you said above, i think you should take advise from you surrounding to classify CR7 even half a way as my friend Behruz said above for Messi and prove his given statements wrong. The other described players by you like Van persie and this tall ibra guy are also better in many ways than your CR7 and he could hardly compete with these players including Drogba as my another friend Loken said. To get him(CR7) a ballon D ‘or i think you should purchase one dummy from the market and better give him and ask him to get relaxed and try out for the next season and i bet he wont get it even nearer to his own records of this fluke season in which his most of the goals came from penalties and Messi will i think probably break his own setmarks and we all will see it in near time. One more thing i think you should ask Fifa to declare a new award naming Fifa Ballon D’or (B) category and letz see if CR7 wins it,,, hi hi hi hi hi hi.
I think Behruz has shutted all critics with his evidence as detailed chart of records. Hurray for Behruz, and as you would be happy to know Don has promoted you to the new Underboss of his Cartell,,, hurray for mighty Messi and hurray for Barca………….. Lez see some other rats come out after Don said so may be the partial author or might be Brad who is burnt alive by Barca’s double slam on United in order to kick em outta champs league finals twice, i m sure he and cloudy will appear with their partial rubbish talks on this for long.
One more advise for Mourinho as being a manager of RM he just praises CR7 every know and then but forgetting an important phase as in other ways he rejects all efforts of rest of RM players as he dont knows that a title is won by a team effort and not a single player like CR7, letting morale of his all the rest of the squad down and creating more controversies in thier own dressing room squabbles. In such a situation he should not even be nominated as one of the best managers category for Ballon D’or. As concerning this he is surely no where near to Pep and again as per me Pep deserves the best manager award and be the winner consecutively twice in a row.

  11. seshy says:

Wat are dis stupid barca fans saying i am not a madrid fan bot it just pains me to see people writing rubbish.while will u be talking about setting records and u put someones personal record then u talk about setting records then u say he equalled someones record or say he is d 4th player to do someting dats not setting a record i am not arguing with d fact dat messi broke some records dis season infact he broke more records than ronaldo.
RM also broke records tanks to ronaldo and dont ever say guadiola is better than mourinho bcos we all know dats a lie .
Thi season RM and Barca met 6 times and messi scored in only 2 while ronaldo scored in 4.messi might hv scored more goals but we know ronaldo played better and yes we know ronaldo got many of his goals from the penalty spot but the same thing applies to messi in which most of d penalty Barca got were not meant to be.
All things said i think we hv to wait till after EURO 2012 to know who clearly deserves it because dat is an edge ronaldo has over messi.
As for now i feel ronaldo deserves it.

  12. Behruz says:

    Hey, Seshy

You don’t have to refer to Barca fans as stupid. If you have a problem with any comment, state your objections.

You claim not to be a fan of RM, but you do seem to be an antibarca. Barca may have disappoined you crushing your club or something.

You favor Ronaldo over Messi only because the former’s club won La Liga this year. But FYI Barca did too by kicking out forerunners such as RM and Valencia from Copa Del Rey. Ronaldo may have scored in four classicos against two by Messi but let’s face Messi’s goals and assists won Spanish Supercopa and kicked RM out of Copa Del Rey. Now before raging for nothing, tell me who is more stupid?

RM may have set or broke some records as a club but do you not forget that Ballon O’dr is not awarded for clubs. You should aslo accept the fact that Messi’s penalties are fewer than your Ronaldo’s and Messi had a game short of your CR7.

If you think it is acceptable to object to some argument simply by saying it is a lie. Let’s apply the same to your argument about Mou is better than Pep.

Ronaldo’s potential participation in EURO 2012 is NOT an edge for him but simply an opportunity, which by the way is off to a “good” start in their friendly against Macedonia.

  13. Yup says:

@loken Mourinho won the champions league, serie A, and the coppa Italia with Inter. This was the first EVER treble by an Italian team and the Italian league is definitely not an easy league to win. The summer before they won the treble, Mourinho added Thiago Motta, Sneijder, Milito, and Eto. So no one can’t say that Mourinho already had the Treble winning team together when he came to Inter. In fact all four of the above mentioned players were starters in the treble winning team and Diego Milito was absolutely key in many of their big games that year. Mourinho made Inter successful and since he left, it has been down hill for the team, even with the same players. He is a special coach and the best in the world right now. He also has won league titles with Porto, Chelsea, and Madrid. O, and Mourinho brought Drogba to Chelsea when he was coach there so Di Matteo can thank him for that.

  14. SIMW says:

Ronaldo broke the record for hat tricks in a la liga season this year with 7 and also broke the record for goals on the road in a year, scoring 23. Don’t forget that Ronaldo also is the first player ever to score against ever La Liga team in one year.

  15. Good day to all Barcelona fans.
a lot of anti Barcelona are in the motor park talking against Messi because he disgrace all english clubs including Chelsea, arsenal, man united and so many of them.

WHO WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE HIS OR HER ENEMY?
WHO WILL BE HAPPY TO PRAISE HIS OR HER ENEMY?
WHO WILL BE HAPPY TO VOTE FOR SOMEBODY THAT DISGRACE HIM OR HER?
PLEASE ALLOW MESSI HE IS THE WORLD LEGEND PLAYER APART FROM PELE.
THAT OF THE 2009/2010 Ballon D’or WAS DENIED FROM Snjeider. FIFA ALWAYS START THE RUN FROM THE SEASON SO Snjeider DID NOT START EARLIER THAT SEASON SO DO NOT BE A CONTROVERSIAL PERSON TO YOUR FAMILY OR TO THE WORLD, THANKS TO MESSI FANS, THANKS TO BARCELONA FANS, THANKS TO LA LIGA FANS.

  16. Sheikh says:

  18. sandy says:

Mourinho dont always talk for only ronaldo we all like ronaldo but what messi did this season i have nerve seen a player like him like messi becaues he will take the ballon dor again

  19. Pcahuna says:

To me, football is an extremely beautiful game. To watch these two players in action is amazing! There are small yet big differences that make Ronaldo a slightly better player than Messi.
    1) Ronaldo is a complete striker, playing in midfield. Ronaldo has to work much harder to make the plays he needs than Messi does. If you were to take the distances from the goals of both players…even though Messi may have scored 50, Ronaldo’s 46 will double the yards of Messi’s: anyone who objects this is clearly not a fan looking at the facts, but looking at the face they love. Ronaldo is a much more complete finisher in terms of the arsenal of ways to score.
2)Messi CANNOT perform without Xavi or Iniesta. Look at his record with Argentina! He has been criticized for this over and over and over again. And many Messi fans know his performances are sub-par to what he can do with Barcelona.
3)Messi, in order to truly crown himself a true master, needs to play in another league, and set records there too. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. What Barcelona have done is extremely smart…dont get me wrong. But for a player to prove he is the best, he has to be the best all over the world in different teams. It does not take a braniac to see this.
    4) Messi needs to involve himself more from behind the lines. Many goals that he scored were sprinting in the last 1/4 of the field. Anyone can reserve their energy and explode like Messi does. How do I know? I play the same style and the same way he does. It is a very smart tactic, but this again is where I see Ronaldo surpass Messi. Because of the amount of work and space Ronaldo must eat up before having a chance at goal.
Before anyone calls me a Ronaldo fan, there are many things he could very well improve in as well that Messi has.
1)Ronaldo can use his head much better. Although he may be gifted with a cannon foot, an eagle eye many times can be more useful. Again, when you have 2 other players on the field that their main focus is like Messi and have to score (Benzema and Higuain), it becomes much more difficult to go goal crazy in games like Messi. Many games I watched Barcelona play, and every time they looked for Messi to put the final touch. When Real Madrid played this year, many times Higuain and Benzema could have made a simple square pass to leave Ronaldo with an open net, or more of a “Messi situation” with him and the keeper alone. Had the strikers of Real Madrid acted like Xavi and Iniesta for Ronaldo, Ronaldo could have easily taken his tally to 60 goals. Dont believe me? Find highlights of all real madrid games from this season, and all barcelona games. Try tvgolo.com for evidence.
2)Ronaldo needs to trust his team mates more. Again, a big improvement from last year, but he needs to be a LITTLE less selfish and make the game more free flowing. There were a few games where it would have been a very frustrating night for a Madridista fan to see the performances he would put on.

As I have pointed out, both players are amazing stars. I would LOVE to watch these two play on the same team…only one problem. Both players tactics would not fare well with the other!

  20. Eto says:

    Its cr7 nothing more

  21. Jujuma says:

I think is c.r7 cause is nt a team player,if they bear messi forefather he should try another club,i know he there nt,jst tell messi to go to another club u i’ll see his secret will surely open i swear, ronaldo is most completed player in the world, ronaldo can play any team pattern, messi can play only with xavi and iniesta, when he played in world cup what did he play, when u want to know a better player you need look there country and club, what did messi play in the last copa america,i think ronaldo is still the best.

  22. Jujuma says:

I think is ronaldo, because can score from any angle but messi can’t also ronaldo wit any part of the body, ronaldo is the best player in the world.

  23. Just cry n pray for god to be better player . u should just b compared wit Rooney , Van persie although they r much more better than u gaynaldo. Just try to learn how to play football from Messi .may b gaynaldo should take training from Messi. So Gaynaldo n Mourhino shut up ur fucking mouth .

  24. barca fan says:

when you talk about Messi and Ronaldo don’t bring international performance because i don’t see Cristiano any better than Messi they performance are no differet they don’t get the surpport they get in they teams .and about Xavi and Iniasta no player can play alone , about the distance of goals Messi ‘s goals are incredeble the way they are pcahuna

  25. Oybek says:

Apart from his free kicks and distance goals, Ronaldo simply finishes the passes from the likes of Ozil and Sami. In this respect, he is as reliant on playmakers as Messi. Messi has also scored a bunch of goals from distance and free kicks.

Players normally capitalize on their abilities in their performances. CR7 is physically superior to Messi and it is not surprising that he can make goals from distance. I believe that players make the most rational choice upon translating the opportunties into goals. That being said, I doubt that CR7 scores goals from different angles just to enrich his portfolio. If you look at the rate of their success ratio of opportunities vs goals, you can have more reliable data to compare these two players.

The argument that CR7 is better than Messi only because the former has been playing in different clubs is quite week in that transfers are normally more a matter of financial decisions by clubs. I highly doubt that CR7 moved to RM simply to prove that he is a multidimentional player.

As for Argentina vs Barcelona where Messi displays different performances, I think we should view that a given in that football is a team sport. Messi has hundreds games in Barcelona againts a few in his national team. Mutual understanding between players and different tactics in two different settings have its impact on his performance. It is inconsiderate of us to expect a single player to be the decisive in every setting. Plus, year by year Messi’s performace is bettering in national team as evidenced by his hat-trick in recent friendly.

Messi is not a player spending all his time within the penalty box of his opponents unlike the likes of Falcao, Drogba and Benzema. He is very active in originating, facilitating and finishing most of Barca attacks. Plus, the cases in which messi singlehandedly created goal leading chances also abound.

One of the popular views today is that Barca has become too reliant upon Messi. For what it is worth, this should counted as a credit to him so long as Barca have a reason for doing that. Look at their game against Sporting Gijon where Messi was absent and see how huge role Messi plays in his club.

think its a bit unfair to compare Messi and C.R.both boys have done well.the best is to share the award this season. This should be done to encourage CR cause he has done everythng over the years bt evry time he does well, Messi has alwys been far better.
Fantastic intertainers indeed. The world is a better place to live with those boys around.Maurinho, the best coach of all time bt must desist frm prejudgement in this case otherwise judges wl be biased.
    thanx guys

  28. DEFO ROONEY OR EVEN VAN PERSIE

  29. jc says:

Why do you all hate on Messi or CR7? They are both amazing players and if they suck why aren’t any of you playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid!

  32. Mardon says:

    Who ever is Ramires?

  33. allthought chelsea did not make a good impact this season in the epl i think drogba should win the ballon d’or because he scored two goals that won chelsea the champions league and the fa cup and made a shit out of messi by defeating barcelona in CL semi-finals

  34. rnarco says:

Dear foottbll legend, d ballon d’or is not awarded to a player for 1 or 2 games…….drogba wont feature even in top three!!!!

im an honest football fan and will say when someone deserves something. ronaldo, another brilliant season for madrid undouted. messi another exceptional season aswell but i would vote for messi for the simple fact that he is 100 times more selfless when it comes to scoring goals and helping the team score. he assists probably twice as much as ronaldo and very rarely do you see him saying oh look at me im all that. messi is the more creative and humble of the 2 and has still outstripped ronaldo in all catagories this season. ronaldo is just unlucky that his career is happening the same time as probably the best player i have ever seen with a ball at his feet.

Messi is the world greatest player of all times. At 24 he has won the ballon d or award thrice. His numerous records gives him an edge over cr7. GO MESSI

DROGBA, DROGBA, DROGBA. no question. Messi & Ronaldo can score all them goals but they didnt win the champions league??? The important goals count its all good scoring goals against wack La Liga teams but thats easy. The BIG BOSS DIDIER!!!

  43. saddique says:

cristiano,he as been able to score on his own which messi cant match

  44. Jordy says:

Why not someone like ramires or drogba……as both were influential in chelsea’s season and ultimately drogba in both FA Cup Final and Champions League Final

Ballon d’Or is not awarded for actors ( Drogba) and unknowns ( Ramires).
