Who should win this year’s Ballon d’Or?

Cristiano Ronaldo

According to Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo deserves this year’s Ballon d’Or.

The Portuguese international bagged 46 goals and 12 assists in 38 league games for Los Blancos in 2011-12, and added 10 goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League appearances.

More importantly, Ronaldo was the best player on the best La Liga team of all-time.

In 2011-12, Real Madrid became the only club in the history of the Spanish Primera to tally 100 points in a single season.

Los Blancos also set the record for most away points in a season (50), most points in the second half of a season (53) and most league goals scored in a season.

In short, Ronaldo fully deserves to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

With that said, some may argue that Lionel Messi, who scored 50 goals in La Liga this season, deserves to win football’s most prestigious individual award yet again.

Jose Mourinho begs to differ.

“Cristiano has to be the Ballon d’Or winner, not because he was the top scorer, which he already was last season, but because his goals won the league,” the Real Madrid boss told SIC.

“Messi scored 50 goals that have not been worth anything, just as Cristiano scored 42 last season that were not worth anything.

“Cristiano has not been able to win the top scorer award and I think that should now be offset by the Ballon d’Or.”

‘Second-tier Candidates’

Robin van Persie: The Dutch striker enjoyed his best season in professional football in 2011-12, tallying 38 goals and 10 assists for club and country. In addition, he led Arsenal to a third-place finish after a dismal start to the campaign. Had Arsenal won the English Premier League, Van Persie may have been “right there” with Ronaldo and Messi, but that was never really going to happen.

Mario Gomez: Gomez was on cracking form for Bayern Munich all season long. He finished 2011-12 with 48 goals and five assists for club and county, including 12 Champions League strikes. Even if Bayern Munich win the UCL, Gomez will probably not win the award even though he may deserve it.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Quietly, but surely, Ibra put together a sensational campaign with AC Milan. Although Zlatan failed to win the league title for the first time since the 2003-04 season, he still managed to seal a second place finish for the Rossoneri. Oh and by the way, he registered 28 goals and six assists in 32 Serie A appearances.

All things considered, Cristiano Ronaldo should win this year’s Ballon d’Or despite Real Madrid’s failure to win the Champions League. It’s as simple as that to be honest.

.. 2 goals to reach the quarters. And now Portugal is on the Semi’s thanks to Ronaldo’s header. With the cagey Spain and the new French team either to be their opponents in the Semi’s, Portugal might get into the Finals. CR7 is now carrying his team on his shoulders, something Messi failed to do.

  9. kazeem says:

I think ballon d or should be given to cr7 this time. He had showd us how brilliant and tallented he is. Its not easy to rule in one league and continue rulling in another. To be candid…let messi also go to another league and show us how tallented he is, but until then, cr7 is d man of timber and wood, d king of all footballers. Hala madrid…

  10. carly says:

messi should win this he broke cr pichichi record and he has now the record with 50 goals, he made it clear vs brazil that he can score goals and have argentina in his back, he won 3 cups with barcelona and cr only 1, you cant give extra points to cr because of the euro because messi is not playing right now in a cup, we have to wait for next season but now its messi

  11. cloud says:

.. carly, we had a copa america last year 2011 and argentina was left in the quarters against uruguay. That hat trick of messi was from a FRIENDLY MATCH, a game that doesnt matter.

.. the Portugal vs Dutch has more meaning and intensity and more so the quarters against the Czechs and Ronaldo didn’t fail Portugal.

  14. Brad says:

Actually, Carly, we CAN factor in the euros. It’s an unavoidable x factor that Messi and Ronaldo are both from different continents, but that doesn’t mean we have to discredit Ronaldo’s performances over in east europe. Example one would be that header Ronaldo scored with authority against the Czechs.

The way you put it, it’s like you’re afraid that since Ronaldo is now playing in games that matter for more reasons than just national pride (which is all that’s at stake when it comes to friendlies), he’ll score bonus points over Messi, who’s only been getting those less important friendlies.

It was fantastic seeing Messi hit a scoring spree with someone besides Barca for once, these past few months. But he’s gonna have to do it more often, and in bigger stages than friendlies, for BOTH club AND country to truly earn the Ballon d’Or again. . .

. . . . . . let alone become the best player ever……….. for those who think that Pele is stupid.

  15. ADRIAN says:

i think messi because him and barca won 5 cups and ronaldo and real madrid won 1 this year ,messi even broke record from 5 players so ronaldo fans the is messi’s year agian

  16. cloud says:

.. and Carly, please don’t forget the COPA AMERICA last 2011. That was a tournament outside the world cup that messi can claim national glory, but they were left in the quarter finals by a lowly Uruguay.

..The Euros is much more difficult, just look at how talented the Dutch side is, RVP, SNEIJDER, ROBBEN, VAN DER VART… the list goes on of wonderful players… but Ronaldo helped Portugal beat the dutch. And now he’s about to face Spain, I hope Portugal wins.

  17. Hayotjon says:

Ballon d’Or: Messi vs C. Ronaldo
    Pre- EURO 2012
Messi had an impressive season with three trophies and a number of individual and club records supported by an unprecendented goal toll both in Laliga, CL and overall. He also proved most of his ctitics wrong by his impressive performance as a part of Argentina NT in their matches against Ecuador (WC Qualifier) and Brazil (International Friendlies), where he was a decisive player in generating and scoring almost all goals). Considering these facts, whether you compare him to CR7 against trophies or individual records, Messi enjoys a clear advantage.

There are some people claiming that Messi’s performance did not make much difference in his club’s overall performance throughout season. To me, it is just a matter of angle you look from: Half full vs. half empty:
While it is true that Barca did not claim La Liga and had to exit CL at semis, they did finish La Liga in a spot qualifying them for CL next season and they did manage to reach CL semis this season, both of which can be achievments if terms of past and potential financial earnings for the club. Looking at Man United’s performance in this year’s CL given the fact that they played in final CL 2011 can help ebtablish my point. At the same time, Barca claimed Copa Del Rey by defeating La Liga front-runners RM, Valencia and Bilbao among others, which is also an achievement. Messi played an intergral part in all the Barca achievements stated above.

The question of which matches are more important and which are less is purely subjective. Personally, I think every single match is important so long as the players play sticking to the rules of football and more importantly they are on the pitch with the aim of winning. What I ofen hear these days is that CR7 displayed more successful performance in “important” matches such as El Classicos, RM vs Bayern. However, to claim that RM won La Liga only because of CR’s goal in El Classico (second) is purely subjective as much as claiming his two goals against Bayern should be given credit is nonsense.

    EURO 2012

CR7 had been barely noticed throughout Portugal’s clashes with Germany and Denmark, which are more worthy rivals than out-of-form Netherlands and mediocre Czech Republic. Again to claim that CR7 singl-handedly defeated the latter two is overly subjective and misuse of the word “single-handedly”. Let me give you an example to what I think this word refers to. Do you remember CL semis 2011 ( Barca vs RM) in which Messi scored his second goal? That’s the performance that best matches the classic intrepretation of the word. That being said, however, CR7’s goal against Czech is the only edge he has so far over Messi. Should he display such a feat against Spain, he will be an ideal candidate for Ballon d’Or unless he blows it with his unorthodox and unsportmanship behavior off the pitch (his interview after Denmark).

  18. Brad says:

^Typical that he’d downgrade Ronaldo like that, but at least he didn’t do the usual “Messi is the best” wall tag and then run to avoid being argued with.

Thing is, Ronaldo’s making performances in Euro, which is harder than Copa America. Sure, he didn’t do good against Germany and Denmark, in fact missing a shot that would’ve been a goal had he been playing for Madrid, I’m sure, but there’s a reason why the Dutch are ranked in the World’s Top Ten and advancing out of the Group of Death is no mean feat, so don’t discredit that, especially as Ronaldo’s goals against the Orange are a big reason as to why Portugal even advanced. And to say that he wasn’t up to much scoring the winner against Czech Republic, they have the current European CL winner, Petr Cech, who I’d say is one of the top keepers in the world.

It’s arguable as of right now, but if Ronaldo scores a winner against Spain, he gets his nose in front. Doesn’t mean that Messi won’t beat him, but it means that Messi will have a harder go of it.

  19. cloud says:

@hayotjon, i’ll just make it short.

Dutch vs Portugal: 2 goals from ronaldo, they went to the quarters

Czech vs Portugal: 1 goal from ronaldo, they’re on the Semis.

can’t you see a trend there ?? Those 3 goals are much more important coz it helped his team reached the Semis. And as Brad has mentioned, against the Dutch who’s in 4th spot in the rankings and against Peter Cech who’s one of the most solid goal keepers in the world. He helped his team beat them all..

.. i can’t understand why people downgrade ronaldo’s performance just because he’s arrogant during press interviews.

  20. Oybek says:

Why would people bring up Copa America to support their proposition that CR7 deserves Ballon d’Or? Unless my memory fails me, Messi was awarded the very accolade despite his underperformance there? Plus I cannot subscribe to the view that Copa America is inferior to EUROs considering that the very continent is the crade of most talents that are the crux of most clubs in Europe. It could be commercially less viable than EURO but it is at least as challenging.

I would not give all the credit to CR7 in Purtugal’s successful performance in EURO 2012 so far. Germany vs Portugal- CR7 was ” sleeping”, while in Denmark vs Portugal it was the thied goal ( not scored by Ronaldo) that saved them the day. It was because of the third goal against Denmark, Portugal was enjoying an edge during their clash against Netherlands. Now saying that CR7 scored two goals against a forth-ranked Netherlands is just arguing on the basis of technicality. Everyone knows Netherlands put up their worst ever performance this year. The onus was on Netherlands to have a two-score difference but not on Portugal. While deserving credit, two of Ronaldo tapins are not to be labelled as the goals that reached them the quarter-finals.

I support hayojon above in that Ronaldo was crucial in their clash with Czech, for which he deserves due credit but embellishing it bringing up Petr Czech is highly intolerable. Football is not, say, boxing, right? Plus did you watch the very VIP you are promoting in their clashes with Russia and Greece?

Now you may say all I have been doing is to belittle CR7.Actually, no. No matter how much I hate the fact, CR7 is a worthy candidate for Ballon d’Or this year. However, something I find confusing is why his compatriots are always keeping talking him up and some fans are trying to support him with highy questionable arguments as if it was a big campaign for some political post. Plus, whether you like it or not, candidate’s performance on the pitch is not the sole factor in the selection panel. Realistically, do you think someone like Balotelli would ever get this award? CR7 might want to stick to his principle ” I am who I am”, but not everyone looks to as a merit.

  21. Sober says:

Too early if not improperly to make a legend of C. Ronaldo yet. Portugal has yet to face a worthy rival- Spain, Germany/Italy. Portugal and Ronaldo gotta thank the netherlands for their unlikely performance this year. Had Porgugal been in any group other than A, they would be anywhere but in Ukraine and Poland by now. By the way, they did face Germany at the very beginning!?

But it is laughable to see how thirsty Ronaldo fans were for a small feat by him as they had something to brag about throughout Ronaldo’s career at the least. I bet all of them are praying day and night that Ronaldo does not blow his once in a life-time opportunity by repeating his ” fantastic” performance against Germany and Denmark. Your problem in the first place is you have chosen to follow highly unstable player. Just watch out your hearts!

  22. Brad says:

Oh, well, about your last paragraph, Oybek, I’m glad that Balotelli won’t be able win a Ballon d’Or, or at least, isn’t very likely to!!!

  23. Brad says:

Also, my argument about the Euro being more difficult really should’ve been more specific: I meant the Group of Death. Of course, Ronaldo underperformed against Germany and Denmark. But hold on: Messi typically under performs a LOT for Argentina. . . and in Copa America, it typically comes down to Brazil (duh), Argentina (duh), and Uruguay (not so much of a duh, given they’re no longer that team from the 20s and 30s). But that wold be interesting, seeing a Copa America Group of Death with those 3 in it. . .

Hopefully, Messi would come up to play like Ronaldo has in the past 2 matches for Portugal, even if it means under performing against Brazil and Uruguay. ..

  25. Christiano Ronaldo deserved it, bcos he is the only best player dat i know for now. And am sure dat he is the one dat will get it and it is sure. He said dat everyday dat he always play football, he always learn from is fellow footballers. So, he deserve it truely.

  26. chris says:

honestly i think that ronaldo is a very great player but messi is better . In an interview Ronaldo says ” I was taught by the gods to teach people how to play soccer ” and Messi says ” I neveer taught you “

  28. JANI says:

THER IS NO ARGUEMENT ABOUT THAT. MESSI IS THE ALL TIME BEST PLAYER. RONALDO IS GOOD BUT NOT AS GOOD AS MESSI. I THINK RONALDO IS A FANTASTIC PLAYER, BUT MESSI IS EXTRAORDINARY. I CALL MESSI A GHOST BECAUSE HE DOES NOT PLAY LIKE A HUMAN. HE BROKE MANY RECORDS THIS SEASON AND IS YET DO IT AGAIN. MESSI ALWAYS PROVES HIMSELF IN THE PITCH BUT FOR RONALDO SOMETIMES (MAINLY AGAINST UNDERDOGS).

  29. JANI says:

MESSI PROVED HIMSELF IN THIER FRIENDLY MARCH AGAINST SPAIN. HE SCORED AGAINST BRAZIL. BEATING RONALDINHO AND NEYMAR BACK TO BACK. THERE IS NO PLAYER IN THE PLANET LIKE MESSI, HE IS A GOD SENT.

  30. Brad says:

    -.-

It’s people like this who are extremely opinionated but don’t give any facts to back their claims that makes me ashamed to be a football lover.

  33. tesfaye says:

I wish to fulfill Ur aims, to successful by Ur work, and to win the BALLON D’OR in the next season.

  34. francis tawiah ossom says:

christiano ronaldo deserves the prestigious honour and he should be awarded as such.

  35. John Elaigwu says:

4 sure, CR7 is de soccer best player dis season. Wit La liga in his pocket, qualified Portugal 4 euro 2012 & Reached de Semis, wit sensational individual display & Pounds of universal goals in all competitions, he’s de right man 4 de AWARD

  36. rit says:

CR7 sould be the best player of the season nt l.messi

  37. richard says:

i think youre all being extremely silly, everyone knows ronaldo is a good player, but playing in the euro’s isn’t such a big deal, messi played for barcelona in the fifa world club cup and still showed his class,
he performs well at national level also its just he has no amazing players other then him, whilst for portugal ronaldo has nani, pepe, alves, coentrao, mautinho, queresma, almeida, varella, the list is endless,
you cannot compare these two players one bit as they play different roles in their team, messi is a creater aswell as a goalscorer, achieving a high assist number this season, and a record number of goals.
ronaldo is a selfish and arrogant waste of space, he only ever passes to please mourinho, if he wasnt told to pass he never would, he gets overly cocky and thinks he can do everything, take the CL semi final for example, played extremely well, got 2 goals, then got cocky and ruined his performance.
messi is consistently modest and deserves the ballon d’or for that sole reason, oh and the fact he won more trophies this season, broke more records, scored more goals, assisted more goals, made the same amount of appearances.
messi will reign over ronaldo forever.

  38. greg says:

NOOOOOO…. you are wrong. mario gomez or neuer will win this year ballo’dor

  39. holo says:

funny how people are overpraising messi for his 3goals against a brazil under23 side, which 2 weeks earlier had lost 2-0 to mexico in a match giovani dos santos, a tottenham reserve team player, got a goal and an assist. Yeah messi is an excellent player but when it comes to bigger games for country, he flops, like in the 4-0 loss to germany, so please do not overate him just because you hate cr7!!!

  40. barca says:

messi should win it he score 72 gols for the season won 4 trophies with barcelona this year broke all types of recors in the champions 5 gols in one game he already won the olympics for argentina thats more than ronaldo has won for portugal yes argentina lost the south america cup in argentina but ronaldo lost the euros in portugal with figo and thats the first time we saw him crying lol but he cried alot since than

  41. samdel says:

just give it to who deserve it and is no one but CR7

  42. Luis says:

Supercopa will be a big factor.

  43. Luis says:

Messi’s 50 goals were worth nothing for barca this season. Plus he played more games than Ronaldo this season having been playing in the FIFA’s club cup. Ronaldo’s goals won the league for real Madrid and were important against Barcelona. Cr7 carried Portugal to semis with his amazing goals but couldn’t defeat barca and real alone. Cr7 is by far the best.

  44. d says:

Messi will win it. sorry cr7 fanboys. /discussion

  45. Dreustche says:

Some people are Messi fanatics and even if Messi sits on the bench half season they will still shout Alleluya to Messi. The little man is tarlented and has wowed people but he is not the only football genius. While I will beg to differ from Hayotjon’s Opinion on CR7, the world has seen CR7′s impressive run this season.
Another player was cheated out of this some years. While Eto’o was at his peak and Messi was his admirer in barca, he won La liga, CL, Pitchichi, Copa del rey, world club championships and scored in all competetions but they gave ballon d’or to canavaro….. yes I know your eyes are wide open with these facts. lol

  46. Trooll says:

Messi deserves it. Its simple. Ronaldo is a good player but messi broke records this year. Ronaldo knows how to score but in football you should know how to give others a chance to score. Messi made a lot assists as well. Anyway we shouldn’t forget Iniesta and his play at Barca and Spain he had a fantastic season.

  47. For me cr7 deserves de award because because he scored 46 la liga goals, won a trophy 4 madrid, 10 goals in UCL and u all saw what he did in de just ended european tournament,he scored three goals but Messi had his opportunity in the copa America he couldn’t even utilise his oppurtunity so Cr7 all the way

  48. don says:

Shut up idiots who prejudicially are pulling CR7′s thong for ballon d or. Better hand ballons into CR7′s thong for sky high bye bye. Its Messi and only Messi to win that and shut up Brad and Cloud especially, guys those Rats are ugly and just don’t count’em for any reasons, they always are busy pulling Cr7 Rl Mad and Man Utd thongs for good…. ha ha ha!

  49. tosiin says:

Well messi deserves the award. Ronaldo is a good player but the truth is fans are overhyping his performances against netherland and chezh republic. Hgentlemen, messi was in his best ever form last season and won more trophies. That he played in the club world cup is an added advantage though, bt remember no one asked CR7 nt to qualify for it too with madrid. Messi has shown class and honour, and realy CR7 was nt the best player at Euro 2012. So pls guys, let the cap be on the head of who it fits

  50. tosiin says:

Abt performances for country, well he wasn’t up to the peak I wud admit, bt we all know how steadily he has improved over the last few months. Gentlemen, messi is miles apart from ronaldo, and really ronaldo I must confess too is miles apart from other footballers too. Messi is surly winning ds guyss
