Who should win this year’s Ballon d’Or?

Cristiano Ronaldo

According to Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo deserves this year’s Ballon d’Or.

The Portuguese international bagged 46 goals and 12 assists in 38 league games for Los Blancos in 2011-12, and added 10 goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League appearances.

More importantly, Ronaldo was the best player on the best La Liga team of all-time.

In 2011-12, Real Madrid became the only club in the history of the Spanish Primera to tally 100 points in a single season.

Los Blancos also set the record for most away points in a season (50), most points in the second half of a season (53) and most league goals scored in a season.

In short, Ronaldo fully deserves to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

With that said, some may argue that Lionel Messi, who scored 50 goals in La Liga this season, deserves to win football’s most prestigious individual award yet again.

Jose Mourinho begs to differ.

“Cristiano has to be the Ballon d’Or winner, not because he was the top scorer, which he already was last season, but because his goals won the league,” the Real Madrid boss told SIC.

“Messi scored 50 goals that have not been worth anything, just as Cristiano scored 42 last season that were not worth anything.

“Cristiano has not been able to win the top scorer award and I think that should now be offset by the Ballon d’Or.”

‘Second-tier Candidates’

Robin van Persie: The Dutch striker enjoyed his best season in professional football in 2011-12, tallying 38 goals and 10 assists for club and country. In addition, he led Arsenal to a third-place finish after a dismal start to the campaign. Had Arsenal won the English Premier League, Van Persie may have been “right there” with Ronaldo and Messi, but that was never really going to happen.

Mario Gomez: Gomez was on cracking form for Bayern Munich all season long. He finished 2011-12 with 48 goals and five assists for club and county, including 12 Champions League strikes. Even if Bayern Munich win the UCL, Gomez will probably not win the award even though he may deserve it.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Quietly, but surely, Ibra put together a sensational campaign with AC Milan. Although Zlatan failed to win the league title for the first time since the 2003-04 season, he still managed to seal a second place finish for the Rossoneri. Oh and by the way, he registered 28 goals and six assists in 32 Serie A appearances.

All things considered, Cristiano Ronaldo should win this year’s Ballon d’Or despite Real Madrid’s failure to win the Champions League. It’s as simple as that to be honest.

  1. Brad says:

A little subjective towards the end there, Umar, but very good facts to prove your point.

For the sake of football’s well being, one player can’t win it every year.

  2. i think LIONel messi should be the one to grace it no one lyk messi

  3. big joe says:

Lionel messi deserve the ballon d’or because he is fantastic.

  4. big joe says:

barcelona coach should be worn to not to come and spoiled the grate team Pep Guadiola builded before he left with the wrong sellections he has been doing.

  5. Deven says:

    Messi deserves it.

  6. Luis says:

Fuck Messi. Ronaldo is better and will always be better. This article says it all. Messi fantastic? Only with Barcelona because with Argentina his crap. Don’t let tv shows fool.

  7. Badhon says:

Of course Messi. Aftar watching what he has done in previous games, it must be Messi. Even the phenomenon Ronaldo has praised him. Messi’s performance shows everything. He can score goals, make other score, he can change the games condition. Aftar watchin his international performance, nobody can say him crap. He is still improving day by day. So he deserves ballon d’or.

  8. sudharma says:

    CR 7 WILL SURELY WIN

  9. Pure24 says:

I think Messi is absolutely magnificent. To be honest, I prefer Ronaldo anyway. But true brilliance must be appreciated. Messi is loads of quality better than Ronaldo in certain, not ALL, areas. And overall Messi has my vote for the best player of his decade, generation even. Ever? That’s pushing it!!!
But, and please before you argue take time to consider this, Messi is not so much better than Ronaldo – for example given the option between two Ronaldo’s and one Messi, no honest person would choose Messi. Two Ronaldo’s would totally destroy Messi! My point is, Messi is not so far better than Ronaldo to be twice the player Ronaldo is. And he is human. He is not perfect, nobody is. And before you slit my throat, Ballon d’Or is not about who is better, its about who deserves to be the player of the year. Ronaldo is way better in terms of raw skill… Messi just has a better way of refining and displaying it on the field.
Messi fans have to take a step back and judge impartially. They thought Messi PERFORMED better when Ronaldo scored more goals than Messi, broke the La Liga single season goals record, and the fastest one hundred goals in a single season record, and they still think he has performed better now. They think Messi has PERFORMED better than Pele ever did.
Think outside the box, and then you’ll realize that Messi is great, a legend. But not as good as you think

  10. Brad says:

Certainly not level with, or better than, Pele.

  11. Prince pikhel says:

Ronaldo deservs to win ballon d’or..He is magical player & has maximum numbers of fans..I don’t think messi deserves ballon d’or….Ronaldo made great victories in Euro 2012 also..so ronaldo is great than Messi..

  12. Pure24 says:

Just to correct (ever noticed how people love to work on the mistakes of others): I meant …record, and the fastest one hundred goals in the entire La Liga history.
At Brad, I cannot even begin to imagine how Messi is even eight kilometers (or is it five miles? Depends on where you stay) close to Pele… And some people say he is better!

  13. messi is all a fans need to celebrate not about just the goal he score ok. it about how he go about managing his performance in the game, the love of soccer is to accept what the game is to offer not about you winner it all. if you have watch the europe 2012 award you will see it all. the game is not only on the pitch. ronaldo should learn to be graetful of others. good things comes slowly ok .he a great player but selfish.

  14. san says:

    inesta….will win 100’%

  15. san says:

    i think inesta wii win,,,,

  16. Aisanho rex says:

messi is fantastic, but has not don’t enough this season as compared to to Ronaldo. Ronaldo should be given this trophy he deserves it. no politics should be involved.

  17. Tebrick says:

Ronaldo deserves it,messi is not worth for the award this year…if messi is given the award then i’ll know that there was cheating

  18. Dobrev says:

Nor Ronaldo or Messi win Ballon d’Or because of what they do on the pitch… Surely it has some effect, but it’s mainly because of their names.. Messi is Messi and Ronaldo is Ronaldo… Someone just thinks that they must be nominated every year, or the award won’t have any “prestige”. In terms of skills and what they’ve done on the pitch, this year’s and next year’s winner should be Radamel Falcao, for he’s done so much for Atletico with his tallent. But I’m sure he’ll never win it unless either Ronaldo or Messi retires… And I don’t think it’ll happen soon… Though Ronaldo will soon be thirty and it shows up a bit.

  19. Pure24 says:

Hmmm… You know, I’ve never thought of it that way Dobrev. We’ve all got our favorites; and we’ve all got our reasons for the player we side with, but Ballon d’Or does not mean ‘Messi or Ronaldo’! Or personal feelings stop us from really seeing the light in others – and from being honest enough to realize and be persuaded. Indeed, there are exceptional performances from other players – from the goal stoppers to the pure poachers

  20. ampong says:

l think messi is the best ever playe in this planet and he deserv every thing in foot ball

  21. ndeh rene says:

i think messi is going to win again, he is still to good for ronaldo

  22. faruk hasan says:

Messi will win Balon d’or again….and for the 04 times…

  23. Hamson D Madridista says:

Well, messi is a great player, but CR7 did a great job this with winning La liga, spanish supercup scoring winning goals 4 Real, This time RONALDO deserve BALLON D’OR

  24. indra r says:

Messi still the best for this planet

  25. Tayo Jay says:

It’s very funny sometimes how humans think!

Messi is definitely not as great as Pele, but I think he has an edge over C. Ronaldo. As I have said before, CR7 may have won La Liga, but Messi was a better goalscorer in all competitions, won more official trophies and broke more important records in the 2011/12 season. Having said that, I think Iniesta may settle this unending dispute for the time being!
If Iniesta is shortlisted in the final three and goes on to win it, then the Messi-CR7 rivalry may be resolved at least for now. Each would not be happy if the other wins it; Iniesta should and justifiably so!

  26. Tejas says:

Ronaldo helped Madrid with the title agreed . But if it was not 4 messing , Baca could have lost by 20-30 pts to Madrid. Besides that 73 goals takes some doing. 5 goals in a match , just brilliant. Messi should win the player of the year

  27. EDI-MIKE says:

Good &fine..when talkñ abt c-boy &LEO messi 4dis year’s ballon d’or. bt if its judged by individual statistics per season den Leo-messi dservs it (77goals,joint highest goal scorer in ucL with 14 goals,5goals in a single uefa match&14 hatrick in a single season).if by UEFA competition xavi Henandez dservs it folowing his record breakñ pass in d euro ‘012 & 4 wining d trophy.if by wining league, den evry good player dat won His league deservs it not only cr-7.

  28. Brad says:

You’re right Tejas, but the problem is this: Where’s the silverware? Messi only helped Barca get the Supercoppa. They didn’t win the CL, or the La Liga.

  29. I’M SURE LIONEL MESSI REALLY DESERVE THE BALLOON D

  30. BECAUSE MESSI IS A FANASTIC PLAYER

  31. Ronlado should win it not bcs messi won three times already, but bcs CR7 deserves it. Played better thank messi, last leason beten him in allmost every meeting – last and this season. Let truth be told.

  32. could there be a football match btwn R madrid and Baca. Let messi play for madrid and CR 7 for Baca, lets see who is better under every circumstance.

  33. cloud says:

@ chris white; we are seeing that scenario already; with Ronaldo on Portugal and Messi on Argentina.

  34. Brad says:

It would be close, too close to call, really. I’m not going to even bother predicting the outcome. I was surprised this past season as I predicted Barca (and Messi) would win against Madrid (and Ronaldo). In a case of Argentina vs. Portugal, the only surprise would be if the final score is 0-0.

  35. emeka says:

guess what guys: cr7 doesnt even get short-listed in d final 3. it’s leo, iniesta & iker period. with cr7 coming a close 4th. leo, cos of his individual brilliance, equalling & breaking of age-old records in the season under consideration. his(&iniesta’s) loss of d liga to cr7&iker’s real, is off-set by d winning of d copa del rey; supercopa d’espania & europe; d club world cup; & a superior head-2-head against iker & cr7’s real. cr7 only comes 4th cos of his individual skills. any cr7 claims to d award cos of la liga win is crass cos d argument can be made that d liga bbva is not as strong as say d epl in terms of spread of strength in d top tier; else top players in each club that won d league in each of d top leagues can also lay claim to d balon d’or. UCL affords us a platform 2 compare across leagues. here, cr7,leo,iniesta&iker finished at d same level but leo had an edge having scored d highest goals with his team playing beautifully(we must always honour beautiful attacking football over negative, defense-minded football when it comes to awards of this nature & that’s why d UCL winner, chelsea goes off d radar. bayern is reckoned with but there was no really outstanding player, comparatively). in d euros, iniesta & iker’s spain beat cr7 hands down. infact cr7’s portugal qualified thru d back down even if they finally got to the semi’s. messi’s albiceleste still top d 2014 qualifying group. In the final analysis, for me really, the choice is between iniesta & leo but ill say it’s leo 1st, iniesta then iker. daring to put iker before cr7 &/or pushing 4 a salary raise has led to the cr7 nebulous sadness. why tell us you’re sad if you won’t tell us why. soccernews, please pay me for this analysis else i’ll let it be known that i’m sad even writing this!!!

  36. Pure24 says:

At Tayo Jay, I also think Messi has the edge over CR7, bt which ‘more official trophies’ did Messi win over CR7 in the 2011/2012 season?
@Emeka… Th@s rily putting personal opinion over the actual happenings. Honestly, I wud rather Casillas wins it, bt do not just ignore CR7’s outstanding performances last, AND this, season

  37. ameh says:

Messi or Ronaldo are all good players but if i were to give the award or ballon d, i will allow messi to change club to determine if he can really perform well because i have seen Ronaldo moving to about 3 clubs and he is performing very well or adapt easily.

  38. Anu says:

    Messi deserves it…
He was the top scorer in La Liga(50), UCL for the 4th consecutive year(14), and Europe(73)….
And All of them are current records….
How could we demand more from a player…
moreover this award is for a player, not for team, so consider performance first…..

  39. Brad says:

Need silverware to back the record breaking up. Otherwise, the challenge for the award is not bulletproof. The records only make it robust, and the Supercoppa only more so. Get La Liga/CL/both, then it’s bulletproof.

  40. success mhoswa says:

ronaldo deserve to win this time cr7 is better than messi

  41. andy vans says:

i think messi is the best player the world has ever had. So he deserves it again

  42. ssebuliba paddy says:

To me i think and am so sure that christiano Ronaldo had a better season compared to messi ang Iniesta.Ronaldo single handedly led madrid to la liga victory last season and he scored the most crucial goals which most of us saw.To me Ronaldo deserves it.

  43. i am sure that ronaldo or fernando torres will win.

  44. rajin says:

ronaldo every clasico he has to fall just to get a free kick but he still cant get that right messi should win it again because u cant compare him to messi.messi is the best ever way beter then that black cake pele ronaldo can compare himself to flcao or xavi end of story.

  45. Aklilu says:

ronaldo is better than messi so the Ballondor is belonges to Ronaldo

  46. AKLILU says:

RONALDO IS BETTER THAN MESSI . SO BOLLANDOR IS BELONG-ES TO THE RIGHT PERSON RONALDO.THANKS

  47. pure24 says:

At Rajin, th@ was such a racist comment!!! I’m so offended… Need I remind u th@ Ronaldo is the only player to have scored in six successive El Clasico’s – and none of them were free kicks!
And anyway, so w@ if Pele is black? Hope you die of cancer!
