Why do so many people hate Manchester United?

Let’s get one thing straight right away. I am not a Manchester United fan. Many people have accused me of being so when I write praise about their side, but I am not, definitely not, a fan. OK?

Recently I wrote an article in which I selected my Premier League team of the year. In the team I put in a few United players. That caused outrage amongst the various people who commented on the article. Typical Manchester United fan they said. Well I hope I’ve answered that one. Typical idiot who only sees the top four clubs, said another. Well, if you’re picking the team of the year aren’t a majority of them likely to come from the four most successful teams?

Actually, as a NEUTRAL I have spotted that Manchester United have more points than anyone else, have scored more goals than anyone else and have conceded less goals than anyone else. I would say that there is an arguable case for United to supply all eleven players for the team!

I didn’t do that though, I looked at the situation without bias and with total objectivity. That, of course, is where I went badly wrong. You cannot be objective about football at all, and don’t ever try to be objective about Manchester United.

So why do Manchester United cause so much discussion? Why are they so loved by millions of people all around the world and so hated by many more? There is a great old joke that says that the only three teams in England with a swear word in their name are ARSEnal, S****horpe and F****ng Manchester United.

Clearly I understand why Liverpool fans and Everton fans and Manchester City fans might hate them. It is only right that you hate your local neighbours. I have an irrational hatred of Luton simply because it is located twenty miles up the M1 from my beloved Watford.

I suppose I can understand why Chelsea and Arsenal fans might hate them because they are in direct competition with them to win the only two major competitions.

Apart from that though, why do the club provoke such extreme emotions in people?

Many people hate their fans. They are portrayed as arrogant and conceited. With due respect to everyone, it is difficult for me to be arrogant and conceited as a Watford fan, but if we became the most successful club in England I might not be able to avoid it. Are Liverpool fans not just a wee bit arrogant and conceited about their historical dominance of England and historical and recent successes in Europe?

Many people hate Sir Alex Ferguson. I’m the first to admit that he doesn’t always come over as being a likeable, jolly fellow. I get as upset with his constant harassing of referees, looking at his watch and gruff manner as anyone else.

Despite having no particular liking for the public character of Sir Alex, I have absolute respect and admiration for him. I don’t really see how it is possible not to, however grudgingly. The thirty-seven trophies he has won over the past thirty years, together with the twenty-one manager of the month awards, seven manager of the year awards and three World Soccer manager of the year awards, tend to make it hard to dismiss his ability.

So is it the players? Well, most people seem to have total admiration for Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. They have had fabulous careers and even the most fervent hater of Manchester United must recognise the contribution they have made to the game.

What players cause the controversy? Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand seem to be the most despised and of course, by many, the most loved. As an England fan I believe that Rio is one of the best defenders in the world and Wayne Rooney is one of only very few players we have that can win a match with a piece of brilliance. As a football fan, forget the whinging and the diving, watching Ronaldo this season has been a joy.

A look at the club’s history produces past greats like Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best. It shows them to be the first English team to win the European Cup, and for an England fan, again, on the day we won the World Cup there was Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton from United right there in the hub of the team.

There was the Munich tragedy of 1958 which was a terrible tragedy to anyone who is not emotionally challenged. They could easily have won that European Cup years before they eventually did.

I’m still no closer to establishing the reasons for this irrational hatred of Manchester United found all over the country. One of the main things that is constantly brought up is that United fans don’t come from Manchester and that all people from that area support City. Of course, that is a myth. They do have many thousands of fans from outside Manchester but a majority of their match attending supporters come from the Manchester area. Everton fans accuse Liverpool of not having any fans from the City. Of course, this is another myth.

I went to school in Watford back in the sixties and seventies. A lot of my mates and I supported Watford but there were many others who supported Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and United. If young people don’t support their local team they are quite likely to pick a team that is successful. Like it or not, over recent years that is quite likely to be United.

People say that most United supporters have never been to a game. Probably true, they have millions of fans worldwide and the ground only holds 77,000 or so. That doesn’t mean that there is very often a spare seat at Old Trafford though!

I’m a Watford fan. I am not a United fan, I have no feelings for them either way. It is just that as a football fan I enjoy watching their team play and admire their record. Why do so many people have such a problem with them? It isn’t jealousy is it?

i hate Man U bcoz the players r just thinking they r d best in the world & not trying to be the best ….They r saying Man U is the best team and can beat every team though being beaten by Liverpool on both home & away …they shut d fcuk up when being beaten with 1-4 at old trafford by Liverpool not like they got 1-3 at emirates

  7. Brad says:

I send my compliments to kayode, veron, and zed for their comments.
4 leaf clover……….. no offense meant but ur jes a prejudiced idiot who dudnt know what a good…… if somewhat arrogant…… football team is.
Man U aint the best, even I- a United fan by blood and heritage- will admit it.
The thing about football that we can all love and hate is that our teams can walk onto the pitch and easily get their butts whipped, and that can be from any team, not jes equals and superiors.
When it comes down to it…… people like 4 leaf clover hate United because of the band wagon jumpers who say thier United fans, because of where United is on the tables, because of the trophies United has one, or because their jes prejudiced idiots who dont know a thing bout football. I can understand those who hate United for the first three reasons, but those who hated us for the last reason i cant and wont and will never understand or forgive unless they swallow their pride of bein such biased fools and at least admit Man U is a good club.
After all, that is what United is…….

First of all, congradulations boys, this topic has been argued about for more than a year! That’s unbelievable. Also, before I sort this whole business out, I’d like to say the man writing in Russian is a fuckin legend. Brad, I believe you said you were thirteen? And you’re from Georgia? Right, firstly, no offence, anyone from Georgia ain’t a manc thru n thru and you haven’t the slightest clue on footy histry. Site some facts please. I won’t lie here, I hate Manchester United with a burning passion, but I will admit (btw I’m a massive LFC fan) that they play absolutely beautiful football. I think they’re style is about as perfect and consistent as you can get. The reason that most people hate manchester united is because they’re ignorant fools. I hate united for 19-26 reasons depending on the competition and for 80,000 more reasons depending on the venue. I’m not gunna name every1 but there ar 3 main reasons united is hated: ronaldo, vidic, SAF. Ronaldo is a prick, he also happens to be the greatest player to grace world football since zizou retired. vidic is a cunt…there’s no follow up to that one. SAF…hands down top 5 football managers of all time. While I hate everysingle one of them, I have an immense amount of respect for all of them. If you’re a true football fan you’ll respect Man U regardless of where your loyalties lie. Just a few more things before I go, man u fans are very fickle and I’m sure that when nxt season rolls around a vast majority of man u fans will be barca fans and ronny fans will be messi fans. And finally, brad, cxtntd, enjoy it while it lasts. LfC were the most dominant force in england for nearly 25 yrs. I’d say that manchester united’s time is coming to an end some time in the nxt few yrs. Chelsea of lfc will win the title nxt year. Time to sign off boys, and brad, learn some history.

P.s. I’m sitting in bumper to bumper on the fdr that’s why I’ve written this minature essay. YNWA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lfc, i learn history all the time dont go telling me that.
U will be surprised if u came to southwest GA and found a small town that is filled with footie fans, and the largest fan group is Man U. Sure, some of them are band wagon jumpers, but me and a SELECT group aint.
    Dont tread on me.
Sure I dont know all of United’s achievements, but I am learnin them all as I go, OK?
Also, I hope u know that a bunch of Liverpool and Chelsea fans roun my home town are unusually arrogant, they put the MU band wagon jumpers to shame….. odd aint it?
Ur opinions of MU fans bein Barca fans and Ronaldo fans bein Messi fans next season will be true on SOME peple , but NOT ALL of us. I stand by United the way i stand by the U.S. National team.
    ONWARD TO VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    MAN U AND U.S. R #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S I say this in lovin support of my club and country….

  13. Brad says:

oh yeah, got a neighbor who is a barca lover, doesnt even know who messi is, thinks he is the newest player in the squad.
    Strange aint it?
    Very strange……

  14. Brad says:

Though i do agree with u about some of ur fellow MU haters…. ignorant, biased fools who dont know what excellent footie is……

  15. lfc from nyc says:

I’m not taking a swipe at you Brad and I’m sure you’re a big man u fan. Alls I’m saying is that site facts when u argue. Go learn abt the days of sir bobby and busby.

  16. agbolade balogun says:

cuz we rank among the best. naturally, we must have haters. its nuffin to worry about, trust me

  17. Brad says:

Sorry for bitin back lfc……… i am very touchy when i think sumone’s havin a go at my loyalty.
I’ve heard of bobby, jes fergot what bout him, and all i know bout busby is that sume of his players- who were nicknamed the busby babes- were killed in a plane crash before either the 54 or 58 WC.
    To Agbolade:
Ur right, though some are jealous of our trophy cabinet- i remember someone put that him and fellow gunner fans are hungry for silverware in a different discussion- and others overs certain other MU fans who are so ARROGANT that they shame us other HUMBLE fans……

  18. kukaka says:

United aint a bad side, az peps like to say, yeht some of em r airogant and Ronaldo is a showboatin diver.

  19. Hassan says:

Hi, and this a note for all Man Utd fans..

First, dont think that Man Utd are the best team because they got much trophies, look..

Real Madird got 31 leagues, and the most team to win the Champions League so Man utd is not the only team who got so much trophies and is the best team!!

    Thank you (:

  20. Brad says:

Hassan, thank you for a good post.
I am a United fan by blood and heritage, and to the very bone…. but that DOESNT mean I am arrogant bout our victories and trophies……..
there is ALWAYS another team that will come along and give us a REALLY HARD kick up the………… well, you know.
For example, Chelsea in 1998 or 99, i ferget, won 5-0 against us, and scored barely 30 secs into the game….. Arsenal, later that month: 2-0 or 3-0 ( i ferget) gainst us…. Chelsea again in 06, Rooney got injured and we lost to the Blues 3-0.
Now, this season, as I ferget almost all other defeats( thankfully!) lost to Liverpool 1-0 and then 4-1…. Fulham- of all the teams i didnt expect to beat us, Fulham is one of em- got us 2-0, and Arsenal got a win- though it was an unconvincing 1 goal victory really- 2-1 over us.
that jes goes to show, we can lose, and there is nothin we can do to keep ourselves FROM losin…….

  21. Gorkan says:

Manutd are hated because of many reasons. One reason is to do with the fans. First thing though is you cant say all the manutd fans are arrogant because there are two types of fans in all football. One type of fans are the people who just like to have a team to support, either watching them on tv or at the stadium. The second type of fan is the one which is not liked, however unfortunately they are the ones which stand out from the crowd. This second group of fans is known as the ‘idiots’ which are people who are not fans of the game but just want to have arguements or fights.
Also another thing is you cant say a true fan is only one which goes to stadiums to watch the games, because that is ridiculous. Alot of people cant afford to go to games, their dam right rip off prices at any of the large clubs.

The second reason is that the ‘idiot’ fans from other clubs also try to cause hatred between each team by getting into fights.

Shame football has lost its greatness, since these idiots have come to football.

  22. Imzy says:

I’m surprised people are still dropping their comments on this ancient article. You hate Man Utd that much?

I hate Man Utd because of my friends (a.k.a. Man Utd fans). If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have hated a great club like Man Utd. My friends are always going on about how Liverpool are reliant on Torres and Gerrard. But whenever I said Man Utd are reliant on Ronaldo, they ‘re quick to brush it off! And I thought some football experts on tv have provided some statistics showing that Man Utd are more reliant on Ronaldo than Liverpool are on the duo based on the goals scored.

Now that Ronaldo’s leaving, I bet they’re keeping their fingers crossed that Man Utd will sign great players to replace Ronaldo because they know Ronaldo’s absence will adversely affect Man Utd performance. I mean, without Ronaldo, who’s gonna nick a goal when a draw seems likely?

Anyway, I still admire Man Utd as a club. They won the title again. I don’t expect Man Utd to do poorly next season. If anything, they will come back stronger with new signings. 2009-2010 will be another interesting season.

  23. Brad says:

Really good posts from Gorkan and Imzy…….
Imzy, we are worlds apart when it comes to this…… I am a United fan, like your friends, but I wont deny that we were very reliant on Ronaldo. Now that he has left, we need some one lese who can fill at least PART of the gap he left, as he was one of a kind, period. Gettin to my point here, now…. here in my hometown, it seems as though the Liverpool fans are the hated ones- which they probably fall into Gorkan’s “idiot fan” category.
Thank you though for your honest comment, as some people who say somethin here on this ancient article are blinded by hatred and/or bias…. and the fact that you hate and admire MU at the same time, while not unique, is great to know.
Gorkan, I just want you and everyone else to know that I aint one of the “idiot fans”. I support United as:
    1) they were the fist team I saw and could remember
    2) some of my ancestors supported them before they moved here to the U.S.-
and I have a habit of faithfully carryin out traditions- and of course I carry that tradition on.
I beleive that we are only ONE OF THE BEST, not the BEST club, that is barca.
But though good times and bad, I will always stand by my beloved Manchester United FC……….

  24. Brad says:

I’d would also like to say that we did rely on Ronaldo more than Liverpool did on Torres and Gerrard, but we will find someone who can replace him, though MU form now on will never truly be the same as it has been these past 6 seasons.

  25. dj i AM says:

WHO EVER HAS WROTE THIS ARTICLE IS ABSOLUTELY NONSENSE.HE HAS HURT THE SENTEMENTS OF MANUTD FANS.

  26. Brad says:

Graham Fisher aint nonsense but he can have the sensitivity of a teapot at times.
    Especially over ManU fans.

  27. Graham Fisher says:

    Thanks for that Brad! :)

  28. Brad says:

I wasnt tryin to be rude, Graham, though. Compared to what some people are like to ManU fans and the club itself, you can consider that as a compliment.

  29. Brad says:

Really, I am a bit surprised that so many people hate us.
I can understand the hatred coming from CFC fans, Liverpool fans, and the Gunners, as they are excellent clubs and are close rivals to us.
But from those who support other clubs, and when it comes to that, clubs that, due to the fact they are in different leagues, will probably NEVER face Man U, I cant understand their hatred for the Red Devils. I know some hate us for some of the supporters, some of whom are arrogant or band wagon jumpers or both, and that is a legitamate reason. Others hate us for winnin so many trophies, but only those who lose to us can use that as a reason for their anger. Those who never face us in a competition, due to the fact they lost to someone else, should vent their fury on whoever beat them.
I can understand Chelsea’s hatred. We beat them for the CL Cup Final in 08. I can understand Arsenal, as we ruined their hopes for a CL Cup Final this year. Liverpool, they are our fiercest rivals, and are always tryin to topple our regime in the Premiership- which everyone is, but they are always leading the attack, and they had a undescribably brilliant- well that does describes it, as an understatement- attempt this just past season.

  30. Brad says:

One last reason why some hate MUFC.
They simply dont know what beautiful football is. And it is pretty bad when a American, comin from a country that, even though we hosted the 94 World Cup, openly defy the beautiful game for other sports that, to me, are down right borin, knows what beautiful football is…..
It’s MU, it’s Chelsea, It’s Arsenal, it’s Liverpool, it’s the Milans, it’s Juventus, it’s the Madrids( even though Real has turned me off with all these desperate buys- money doesnt help u win!) its barca, its Brazil, its Italy…. do I have to keep going? Yall should get it by now……
At club level, the Big Four of football are, and this is my unbiased opinion:
    1.) Barcalona
    2.) Manchester United
    3.) Liverpool
4.) I’m not sure bout this one yet, either Arsenal or Real Madrid, one of them.
The fact is, those people single out Man U for the fact we have had a large amount of the world’s best, and that we have the most trophies in England and are tied with Italy and second only to Barca. They dont like the way some of our players display their moves, and the way they behave sometimes. But the main reason why they hate MU is that they are not true beleivers of beautiful football and are blinded by a hatred that they shouldnt feel.
They are arguably the scum of football…….

  31. Darren Kaplan says:

The truth is that Manchester United have a long, rich, and successful history. You cannot detract from the achievement this club have made to-date. Now, if someone has had a bad experience with Manchester United fans, you should understand that there are many millions more and the chances that you would run into a very modest, likeable supporter of the club is quite good. It’s unfair to say that we are “arrogant” just because we like the fact that our team has done exceptionally well, especially over the recent few seasons. I’ve been reading the posts and it seems like the only people here who claim that Manchester United fans think United are the best team in the world are the non-United fans… no United fan here has said that United are the best and the fact that people are trying to argue against that statement is just silly as nobody has made it besides you! Is United successful? Yes. Very. You cannot hold that against us. We haven’t gone on financial crusades to bring in the world’s very best players to bolster our ranks and take on the world. We always did it from the ground up, through development, an excellent scouting system, and an unbelievable coach. Who was Cristiano Ronaldo before he came to Manchester United? Anybody? United’s success doesn’t lie in its cup wins, it’s league trophies, or it’s scores, but in the spirit of the club that makes any player a star and can turn any game, whatever the occasion, into a reason to celebrate. You can’t hate a club because they do well and you can’t despise them for enjoying their successes. If you win the lottery, I hope you don’t expect people to come poop in your lawn… why would they? I’m sorry, but the stupid reasons given here for hating Manchester United come out of an ignorant place and an ignorant place only. I could come up with an infinite amount of reasons for hating a club if none of the reasons made sense also! I challenge anybody to give me a well thought out, intelligent answer as to why you dislike Manchester United.

  32. Brad says:

Oh wow, Darren! If I was a ManU hater- which I aint- than I would have a hard time trying to make a comeback against that kind of post!
    :)

  33. Brad says:

And it goes especially well with the ManU haters.
If they hate us so much, why do they think we are the best?’:(
The thing is, we are not the best, we are one of the best, I have stated this too many times to count now. Those who hate us are ignorant, like you said, and blinded as to what a GOOD club and team is…..
    GO RED DEVILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    :)

  34. Brad says:

Some ManU fans were a little arrogant sounding though, as one put we had the best in everything, stadium, coach- which I agree on that one as Ferguson is just downright excellent- and players, etc.
Old Trafford is only one of the world’s best stadiuns, Wembly beats it badly, even though i heard the pitch is in poor condition. Ronaldo is certainly the best player, though he has a BIG, and I mean BIG, rival in Messi.
Another one said it is about our trophies and went on to call all ManU haters LOSERS. That was stupid and arrogant.
The post after that one read:
    Quote:
“The source of the hatred is the arrogant fans, not the trophies. For example, see above.:(“

  35. Brad says:

Sometimes, people jes dont like a different club winning. they want their club to win and losing to another opponent all the time is sure to spawn hatred or at least an annoying headache.
For example, West Brom probably hates Chelsea, as they have lost all of the past 28 or so games to the Blues, and have scored only 2 or 3 goals in this losing spree. I’m sure the Brom guys are very resentful to the Blues.

  36. kukaka says:

Brad and Darrne have some good points…….
I am a american, like Brad and some other guys who have posted comments on this discussion, but unlike Brad, I dont support ManUnited and dont understand why British people hate ManUnited, along with many others around the world.
To me, hating a club is flat out ridiculous. What’s the point in hating someone if they dont hate you back. Brad and those non-arrogant ManUnited fans dont hate the other clubs, so the supporters of those clubs must take the pepper spray out of their eyes and not hate or like the Red Devils, but respect them for their abilities.
Of course, I am not British and dont get so caught up with adoring even my own club. Us Americans enjoy sports simply for the entertainment.
    GO RAPIDS GO RAPIDS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. NotHappy? F**K Off says:

the answer is easy. why many hate man utd is because… man utd is good.. why? look at the retarded ronaldo hater, why they hate ronaldo? it’s because he’s good.. you all are just jealous, some stupid people.. go support your stupid club. still not happy? why they didn’t hate all the club that are not good, it’s because their club is better then that club. they hate man utd because thier supid f**king club is a loser who always lose to man utd. face the truth guys. why didn’t you guys hate all the club that are from the league 1….. you guys is a loser just like your club.. hahaha.. this is the FACT… so go and play your ps2 or ps3 and play against man utd, because that is the only way you can beat man utd.. so.. f**k off

  38. Brad says:

And yet the arrogance still shows from some of us…. for example, see above.

  39. Nas says:

if you are saying man utd fan is arrogant, then look at other fan.. in fact, in my country, there are some arrogance fan too.. it will be impossible if not a single fan from other club is not arrogant… and i even heard from my uncle who watch the man utd-barca match, there were some barca fan shouting ” f**k u man utd, loser! ” when barca have already won.. that is arrogant. and if you are calling me arrogant just because i say ” f**k here f**k there ” then you might as well wear a man utd and walk alone in chelsea fan area or whatever club it is, and see what happened next.

  40. PAT WAR-NAIJA says:

  42. mad says:

    it’s a fact.i hate mu too

  43. Rons Reno says:

MANU is wellknown in asia. Everyone like manu – the player. However, what we hate is that they play slowly that’s why MANU lost in the final champeon league.

  44. James says:

I think it’s interesting how this offseason’s transactions have really backfired on some of the comments by the anti-MU supporters. Fergie has managed to keep his head on despite having all the extra cash, so much for the talk that MU’s success comes from transfer fees and wages.

And all this talk about MU supporters not being from the area..my understanding is that most of the controlling owners of the major clubs are not even British, including MU, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, etc. (so much for local support eh) The average fan doesn’t have the resources to just fly to Manchester to watch games whenever they want, which is why MU goes all on these international tours so that their fans can watch them play.

In addition, the British fans talk about the ignorant international fans. Yet it is the British ignorance that fails to realize it is the EPL that aggressively seeks airtime in the rest of the world to maintain profitability, thus creating international fan bases.

  45. I love to say dat i hate manchester united vry much dats why my bro also dnt like me coz he love manchester but i wnt to tel some thing abt da courage of SIR ALEX FERGuson i m vry much astonished abt his courage coz he pass his whole life wid manchester bt he nvr became bore wid there plyer i mean especialy wid Giggs etc

i say that i hate man u and theyre a bunch of flashers but i respect them cos thats what every big 4 team does, even if they dont notice. in my opinion this hate man u and hate liverpool crap is stupid. i mean its just a game and it doesnt really affect a fans life if man u lose the premier league 2 liverpool or chelsea or arsenal win because its about trying ur best. so think b4 u say that u hate man u or liverpool or any other english team cos its about tryin and there is always people that hate the team u support. and also shut up and keep ur opinions to ur little fan sites and hate sites. GO LIVERPOOL FC 4EVA! GERRARD! TORRES! RIENA AND BENITEZ! LIVERPOOL LUV PEOPLE! goodbye.

  47. pramesh says:

  48. MUgogo says:

those who hate MU r FUNNY

  49. Noah says:

I will NEVER be part of Manchester United, because thier reputation (Bad) (Match fixing, buying of refree, they dont buy black players (that alone shows how rasist they are) and other thinks like depending on one player eg Christiano Ronaldo. Why i said that is because their cauch once made one comment that the day Ronaldo would leave Man-U he would leave too. And now ronaldo is not their but he the cauch is still their doing what? i dont know! That make them inconsistent and that will make them to continue losing their matches.
    UP CHELSEA
    Bye
