Will champions be frustrated in the transfer market this summer?

Manchester United fans may need to be patient with new boss David Moyes in the transfer market

Manchester United fans may need to be patient with new boss David Moyes in the transfer market

Manchester United boss David Moyes has yet to make a signing since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in the Red Devils hot seat.

The Scot was expected to spend big this summer at Old Trafford and further strengthen the United squad. Moyes is now being criticised for not bringing any new additions this summer.

Frustrated

However, all Moyes’ moves to bring in players so far have ended in failure. Their bid for Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas ended unsuccessfully, as the former-Gunners captain decided to stay in La Liga with the Catalan giants.

Most recently United have also failed with a bid for Athletic Bilbao’s talented central midfielder Ander Herrera.

The Basque club have revealed that the 24-year-old will only leave if his minimum fee clause of £30.75million is met and he wants to leave.

High-profile

The most high-profile failure to sign players was when Moyes returned to his old club Everton and made a bid of £28million for Everton’s star duo Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines. Toffees boss Roberto Martinez was not happy about the bid, but has yet to state that the pair are not for sale.

Cautious

Manchester United fans may need to get used to Moyes procrastinating in the transfer market. The Scot was always cautious in the transfer market at Everton. He took a long time to do deals and was always very careful with Everton’s money.

He is now operating in a completely different financial league at Old Trafford. However, he has not yet been able to change his mind-set to suit the club. Surely as a boss that has been starved of resources for 11 years he would be looking to splash the cash and bring in big players.

Return

Moyes could yet return to Everton with an improved bid for Baines and Fellaini before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday night. An improved bid of £36million is also believed to have been turned down.

There is a suggestion that Everton would probably sell the pair for £38million. Toffees boss Martinez is also believed to have contingency plans in case United do come in with an acceptable offer for the highly-rated pair.

Weakness

If Manchester United have a weakness it is the lack of a top quality central midfield. A creative central midfielder must have been David Moyes priority this summer. I think most United fans would admit that they would like their team to bring another central midfielder before the window shuts.

There are quality players available and United may just have missed a trick with Tottenham signing Christian Eriksen. Former-United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was believed to have been tracking the young Danes career.

Eriksen cost Spurs a relatively cut-price £11.5million from Ajax. Eriksen could have been the ideal solution to United’s lack of creativity from midfield. He is young, but he has the talent and potential to go on to become a great player.

Maybe Moyes cautious nature got in the way of looking at signing Eriksen. I am sure Eriksen probably would have chosen United ahead of Tottenham, just for the fact that Champions League will be on offer at Old Trafford this season.

Linked

Another player that has been linked with Manchester United is Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil. The Germany international could be available when Gareth Bale’s expected move to Real Madrid is completed in the next few days.

Ozil could be a fantastic signing and is believed to be valued in the £25million bracket. Ozil is exactly the sort of midfielder that United have lacked in recent seasons. The likes of Shinji Kagawa and Anderson both arrived at Old Trafford with big reputations, but neither have quite lived up to their potential.

From Moyes first team selections it appears that David Moyes does not rate Kagawa, and Anderson’s United career has been plagued by injuries. Ozil would definitely be an upgrade on either of the pair and be an exciting signing for United.

Trust

Sir Alex Ferguson chose David Moyes as his successor and Red Devils fans must now trust the veteran Scot’s judgement. Ferguson had admired Moyes for over a decade and even tried to appoint Moyes as his assistant prior to his move to Everton. He has now got his wish with Moyes now at old Trafford.

Moyes needs time to become accustomed to being at one of the biggest clubs in the world. The former-Everton boss has the potential to be a very good United boss, but he will need time to adjust to life at Old Trafford, especially when it comes to spending his clubs money.

Will David Moyes bring any new signings in before the transfer window shuts?
