Now the dust has settled and Manchester United have finished their summer spending spree United boss Louis van Gaal has to try and fit in all his new expensive acquisitions.
The biggest arrival of deadline day was Colombian striker Radamel Falcao from Monaco for a loan fee of £6million.
Backup
His signing was to make up for the loss of Danny Welbeck to Arsenal and Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid.
Hernandez and Welbeck either spent the majority of their United careers on the bench or out of position.
Neither ever looked like they could replace first choice pair of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
However, Falcao has not come to Manchester United to sit on the bench and it is likely that he will be first choice striker.
That means that one of Van Persie or Rooney is likely to miss out or be moved into a different position in the near future.
Favoured
Van Gaal’s favours the 3-5-2 formation and means that if the veteran Dutch boss perseveres with his favoured formation somebody is going to miss out. The obvious alternative would be to move Rooney into a midfield role, which he has of course played in before.
Rooney has produced some decent displays in the middle of the park, but as Angel Di Maria played in a more central role in a midfield three last season the Argentinian could also play in a centre midfield role at United.
Rooney could play in the number ten role just behind the two strikers, but that would mean Spaniard Juan Mata missing out or being bench. Van Gaal has to find a way of fitting in the likes of Falcao, Rooney and Di Maria somehow.
Sensible
For all the big name summer arrivals I think the one that made the most sense was the signing of versatile Holland international Daley Blind. He can play at full-back, centre-back and as a defensive midfielder.
The former-Ajax star impressed at the World Cup and played in a variety of roles for the Oranje. He could be a very useful player for Van Gaal to have in his squad. The United boss knows him well from their days together in the Dutch national team.
It looks like he could start his United career either as a left wing-back or as a central midfielder, two positions that he appears to have the ideal attributes to play in.
The likes of Di Maria and Falcao will provide star quality, while Blind could provide quality in a variety of different positions.
Change
United boss Van Gaal now has a very good selection headache on his hands. The players that have arrived in recent weeks may force the Dutchman into changing his formation, because he now has many different options.
United now have an abundance of attacking players that they need to try and fit into a team, which could be harder than it seems. Van Gaal has brought success to many teams, but man-management has not always been his biggest strength.
This season he will be forced to leave quality players out of his starting line-up, even if he rotates his squad. The job at Manchester United could be the most difficult challenge of his career, despite the club being the biggest Premier League spenders of the last transfer window.
Stronger
Manchester United has a far stronger squad than the one that finished last season. The Red Devils have spent big this summer, but have added some real quality to their ranks. This summer’s transfer window has been a stark contrast to last summer’s when only Marouane Fellaini arrived at the club.
I am sure that United fans are far happier with the business that Van Gaal has done, than David Moyes dithering last summer. Whether Van Gaal can fashion a successful team out of the players he now has remains to be seen.
However, the Dutchman is now under pressure to deliver after such a big outlet on players. I for one would not back against the 62-year-old bringing the club success in the near future, even if at the moment the team do not appear to be in the best of shape.
Can Van Gaal mould quality players into a winning unit?
