Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney was shown a red card in his clubs 2-1 home victory over West Ham on Saturday.

Rooney was dismissed for a lunge on fellow England international Stewart Downing in the 59th minute.

Rash

Everybody knows that Wayne Rooney has a temper, but some of his actions at times have to be considered as rash.

The numbers of incidents that Rooney has been involved in down the years and he still has not learnt from his mistakes.

Responsible

It seemed that in the last few years the forward had matured and became a far more responsible character. He is not considered as combustible as he used to be. In his younger years he was looked at as a potential liability when he was wound-up.

He was involved in several incidents that cost his team in high-profile games, or in games afterwards through suspension.

Apologised

Rooney has apologised to his teammates for his red card. He obviously has seen the incident in the cold light of day and realised that he has done wrong. He could have cost United the victory and piled more pressure on United boss Louis van Gaal.

The apology was the right thing to do, but would it not have been better to have not been involved in the incident in the first place?

Suspended

The sending-off will see Rooney miss United’s next three Premier League games against the striker’s former club Everton, West Brom and Chelsea. Two of those next three games will be considered difficult ones for the Red Devils and Rooney’s presence in the United team may have been crucial.

Missing the game against former-club Everton may hurt Rooney the most, as he seems to enjoy the encounters with his boyhood club and former-employers.

Rooney may be United’s captain, but with the attacking options the Red Devils have at their disposal this season the forward may have a fight on his hands to get back into the starting line-up when he returns from suspension.

Character

Unfortunately what makes Rooney do these silly things is probably what gives him the hunger and desire to play football. Unlike some players he seems passionate about the game and gives everything when he is on a football pitch.

Sometimes though that passion is directed in the wrong way and leads to Rooney getting frustrated and acting aggressively towards opposition players. This is very unlikely to change, as it seems to be part of the forward’s personality.

The personality that inspires the footballer, also floors the human being at times. He just cannot seem to control his temper, even when his team are in a winning position. These incidents do not always seem to be born out of frustration.

He has done a lot in recent years to curb his petulant acts and behave in a more mature manner, as he has got older. However, that self-destruct is in his DNA and he does not seem to be able to control it.

Repeat

Wayne Rooney is a repeat offender. This is certainly not the first time something like this has happened and it is also pretty certain that it will not be the last time an incident like this will happen involving the forward.

The England captain may have aged and learned to slightly control his temper in recent years, but there will always be that rash streak inside of him that makes him lose it and perform silly acts on a football pitch.

Will Wayne Rooney ever learn to control his temper?

There are two problems with Rooney. First, physically, he is no doubt a good player, but nowhere near the super-crack that many would have us believe. Second, mentally, he is all but useless. A football player is a combination of those two features. People like Bobby Charlton, Johann Cruyff and Pele had them both. Rooney, like Balotelli, has almost one of them, but none of the other. That’s why the big continental clubs (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, etc.) have never made a real attempt to snatch him, and never will: They don’t want a player that, however good on the physical side, has essentially no brain.

    No.

Suarez will never learn to stop diving and biting.

Balotelli has learned somewhat the past couple years, but it won’t completely go away for him either.

And Joey Barton. . . nuff said.

Rooney isn’t gonna be able to completely rid himself of his human IED-level temper.
