World Cup no longer on Metzelder’s mind

(GSM) – Christoph Metzelder has accepted that he is not going to be part of the Germany squad at the World Cup. The Real Madrid defender hasn’t been on Manuel Pellegrini’s mind this season and already said he wanted to leave the club on a loan base. However, the former Borussia Dortmund centre half hasn’t found a new club during the last transfer window.

Metzelder played his last international match for Germany on June 29, 2008 (European Championship final against Spain) and hasn’t heard a word from Germany coach Joachim Low “in almost a year.”

“Realistically, I have got to accept that I am not going to be at the World Cup,” Metzelder told Kicker.

“I have not had any contact with Jogi Löw in almost a year. Even towards the end of last season when I played in some of the top games for my club, there was no contact.

“And the national team coach never really tried to come and see me live.”

Nevertheless, Metzelder still believes he made the right choice in leaving Germany to join the Spanish giants.

He said: “It was the right step. I have enjoyed training at the highest level every day and you don’t get that at hardly any other club in the world.”

Still, Metzelder is set to leave Real after this season.

“Even if something were to drastically change with my sporting situation, I will end my adventure in Madrid.”
