Would Jermain Defoe be a good signing for Newcastle United?

Media reports today are suggesting that Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe would turn down a move to Newcastle if offered the chance.

The reports were strange because it had no direct quote from the player stating he wouldn’t be interested in a move to the North East. In fact they had no quotes from anybody at all.

Linked

The England striker had previously been linked with a £10million move to Newcastle and Magpies boss Alan Pardew is a known admirer of the striker’s. Newcastle have cash to spend and it seems a logical move for them to make.

Frustrated

Alan Pardew has been frustrated in his attempts to bring in another striker to play alongside new boy Demba Ba next season. The Toon boss has been attempting to sign PSG striker Mevlut Erdinc but the move seems to be taking longer than expected and it seems it could collapse.

Replacement

Newcastle are still looking for a striker to replace the departed Andy Carroll. Defoe is a different sort of striker but he offers pace and usually a good level of composure in front of goal.

Goals

Defoe struggled for goals last season and managed to find the net just four times in the Premier League. It wasn’t a typical season for the England international and he is capable of a far better goal return.

The season before last Defoe managed to score 18 goals in the top flight and was regarded as one of the top strikers in the Premier League. He has also scored over a century of goals in the Premier League. You don’t do that by being a poor striker.

Stale

None of the Tottenham strikers were outstanding last season. And maybe Jermain Defoe has gone slightly stale in North London. He may be in need of a fresh challenge elsewhere and Newcastle wouldn’t be a bad club to go to.

Hero

The Geordie fans are looking for a new hero after the departure of Andy Carroll and last seasons captain Kevin Nolan. By moving to Newcastle and being successful Jermain Defoe could be just the hero they are looking for.

Newcastle fans love their strikers and I’m sure the England striker would thrive on that sort of adoration. Defoe is a striker who needs to be loved to be at the top of his game and performs at his best when he is supported.

Uninterested

It seems from reading some of the fans forums and websites that Newcastle fans wouldn’t want the England international at their club. Maybe they are just trying to counteract the claim that he doesn’t fancy a move to St James Park.

Jermain Defoe still has a lot to offer and I believe he would be an outstanding signing for the Magpies if they could sign him. However I believe that if Defoe became available for transfer Newcastle would have stiff competition for his signature.

Unfinished

After struggling for goals in the top flight last season I believe that Jermain Defoe will think that he has unfinished business at Tottenham next season. He will be even more determined to prove his doubters wrong and start hitting the net on a more regular basis.

With this in mind Jermain Defoe will probably still be at Tottenham when the new Premier league season kicks-off. Defoe is too good a goalscorer to have another season like last season and is bound to improve his goal tally next season and that will be to Tottenham’s benefit come the end of the season.

Would Jermain Defoe be a good signing for Newcastle?

I don’t think he’d wants to go play in a place with so much off-the-pitch trouble. I still can’t get over that they sacked Chris H.
