Xavi has refused to come up with any excuses for Barcelona’s humbling defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
The German side followed up a 4-0 first-leg success at home with three more goals at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening and the Spain international admitted Bayern were simply the better side.
He told Canal+: “The team tried in the first half but after (Arjen) Robben’s goal it was impossible. I congratulate Bayern, they were better. We were not at our best but they deserved it.
“We’ve had problems in defence with (Carles) Puyol and (Eric) Abidal missing. There’s also (Javier) Mascherano, (Sergio) Busquets and (Lionel) Messi injured too, but we can’t look for excuses, Bayern were better.
“It’s not fair to say German football is better than Spanish based on these matches.
“Our team is still a good team. We can keep on winning for many years.”
The Spaniard’s midfield partner Andres Iniesta thanked the Barca fans for their support and warned that his side will return stronger.
Iniesta said: “It was a very tough tie. We have to thank the people for all their support from when we arrived on the bus until the end of the game. We will return to fight for it next year. Forca Barca.”
