Basel boss Murat Yakin was not disheartened by his side’s last-gasp defeat to Chelsea in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

David Luiz’s injury-time free-kick sealed a 2-1 win for the London club after the Swiss side looked to have snatched a late draw with a controversial penalty.
But whilst Yakin was pleased with his players’ application, he lamented their inability to unlock the Chelsea defence earlier.

He said: “Well I saw my team try to dominate the match and be creative for the entire game, that pleased me.

“We were very well organised but Chelsea were also well organised and set up very well in defence. We just couldn’t find the free spaces that were needed to unlock this defence.

“They took advantage of set-pieces with the tall and powerful players they have in their squad. We tried to look for chances throughout the game and of course we had to have a lot of nerve to do that. Both sides created a lot of chances and I guess the fans from both sides will have enjoyed the game.

“We eventually managed to equalise close to the end. The team reacted very well and I think we were looking for the winner but at the end we were the unlucky team and it was a shame to concede a goal so late on.

“Overall we showed passion and a very good performance.”
