Zambia FA: Messi´s record belongs to Chitalu

The Zambian FA has claimed Godfrey Chitalu holds the record for most goals scored in a calendar year, rather than Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

The Argentine netted his 86th goal of 2012 in Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Real Betis at the weekend to break Gerd Muller’s long-standing record, but the African nation’s governing body insists former Kabwe Warriors star scored an impressive 107 goals in 1972.

“We have this record, which has been recorded in Zambian football, but unfortunately it has not been recorded in world football,” a spokesperson told NewsDay Zimbabwe.

“Even as the world has been looking at Lionel Messi’s record, breaking Gerd Muller’s, the debate and discussion back here has been why Godfrey’s goals are not being recognised.

“We have commissioned an independent team locally to go back into the archives and record minute-by-minute each of those goals.

“The team that we have put together is going to calculate all of those goals, recording which ever game or tournament they were scored in.

“We will then send that to CAF and FIFA so that we can show that, while Messi’s record is there, while Muller’s record is there, the actual record holder in terms of goals per calendar year is actually an African, it’s actually Godfrey Chitalu.”

Chitalu died in 1993 when a plane carrying Zambia’s national team crashed.

Really….I scored 203 goals in minor league 10 years ago, so I must be the record holder. What these people are thinking about?

  2. Tari thomas says:

Rubbish can u compare a minor football u play in african nt even big club in zambia side, to compare wit dat of the world major tournament rubibsh. Did ur chitalu played in caf competition.

  3. Ofudje fergusson says:

We ar talkin international football and u ar talkin local.

  4. Brad says:

One thing stays the same though: Pele is still the best ever.

  5. maxwell mbewe says:

as so long as it says most goals ina calenda year then Chitalu rules. if they say major tournaments then Messi takes it. Messi may be the king of football today by as far as goals are concerned let the Merit go the real scorer….UCAR CHITALU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Chanda Moono says:

FIFA SHOULD BE TOLD WHY WE CALLED HIM “UCAR”, IN ZAMBIA. IT WAS NOT FOR NOTHING. HE USED TO TERRORIZE DEFENDERS AND SCORE GOALS AT WILL.

  7. Anik says:

Brad u r a Rubbish man. Pele played like local football.

  8. Brad says:

Anik, you didn’t do your homework. He played professional club level and international level, and he had huge success at BOTH levels. Meanwhile, Messi has only done so at club level.

Say what you will about Pele’s teammates, the same can and will be said about Messi’s. They are both the crown jewel on heavily star-studded teams, Messi at Barca, Pele at Brazil. The difference is that Pele performed without all those huge teammates for Santos, and later the NY Cosmos, as well as Brazil, whilst Messi has only performed up to true potential at Barca.

There’s also a matter of the FACTS that Pele helped Brazil win 3 World Cups in his international career, scoring 12 times in 13 matches, but Messi hasn’t even reached a semi-final, and on top of that, he’s only grabbed 1 goal in up to 8 appearances for Argentina in the World Cup.

Now, I believe that Messi can, and eventually will, break Pele’s overall scoring record of 1,283 goals in 1,360-something matches. Records are made to be broken. But he’s not going to win 3 World Cups. Maybe one or two, but not three.

Therefore, there is indeed proof that Pele is the best ever footballer, and Messi is certainly NOT. . . at least for right now, I’ll tell you; he might change that. But he hasn’t yet, and the odds of him succeeding are decreasing by the year.

Now, if you even bother to reply, what will you have to say to even give yourself a fighting chance, given I’ve taken all the facts needed for a nutshell argument and put them at you? What besides the “f you’s” and other insults intended for me and for Pele will you throw at me? I’m waiting.

  9. messi says:

hey guys its messi and im the best

  10. Haokip says:

Brad…did pele played in europe? Did he play in the champions league(european cup)…can you compare la liga with brazillian league. Pele did not win the wc alone …he was surrounded by legends

  11. Haokip says:

If winning 3 wc makes pele the best…then his other teammates who also won the wc’s with him should also be considered as the best…besides the champions league is much tougher to win then the wc….and messi already has 2 ucl medals and he alrready broke muller’s record which pele can’t,he already won 2 ballon’d,……..to name a few of messi’s achievements which pele can’t match

  12. Incarsus says:

107 goals in a year? maybe there’s no goalkeeper in Zambia at that time. And it’s just on a minor league, maybe some goals were scored in friendlies.

  13. Incarsus says:

Australia scored 32-0 against Samoa, so if Chitalu’s team is challenging the likes of Samoa’s team many times in a year, scoring 107 goals is that easy, maybe can score higher.

  14. African says:

If its an African its not worth considering.Thats why people dont want to accept that Chitalu really scored the most goals.

  15. Brad says:

@Haokip, ever heard the critics say that the 1970 World Cup team for Brazil was called the best squad of all time? And did you know that no other player can even claim to have been on the squad when his country played in- and won- 3 World Cups? No.

And the UCL. .. bull, man, just bull. The World Cup is shorter and therefore more intense, and it consists of 32 teams using the best players they’ve got to win. 7 games against 13, to win the trophy. . . . you can’t even compare it, Haokip.

Funny you should also mention records. . . is that all you got? Name some TROPHIES (aka the real stuff) that Messi helped Argentina win. . . oh wait, NONE. 3 World Cup medals. . . no one in the world who has played in a World Cup or two so far can match that.

You’ll never win. Records, or Trophies? Last time I checked, Trophies were actually tangible (in a literal sense), and your club’s name (and by default, your name with it) go on that trophy. . . FOREVER.
As for records? Someone always comes along to break em. Sometime in the future, a player’s gonna come along and break those records Messi has made for himself. After all, records are meant to be broken, even Pele has said it, but no professional in the world right now stands a chance of equalling- or beating 3 WC medals. Maybe some day from now on. . . but not today.

So what have you got that can stand against silverware, and win?

  16. winston M says:

To me no matter what Ucar Chitalu has the most goals(107) compared to Messi, let’s not think negative of him becoz he z an african.let the records b proven wrong bt for now Messi stands out.

  17. hike deco says:

You can’t handle the fact that actually an African yes an African has been the most prolific striker in a calender.so go on and look for excuses but hey its CHITALU

  18. pelon says:

chitalu who is that nobody knows who the f*** he was until know and plus how come the africans didnt claim that when it actually happend cuase its all bull yes bull and a big big plus african league is less than amature its like my nephews little kids league jajajaja plis du u guys really want to give it a fight even i will score as much goals in the african league

  19. Zindaba says:

The Zambian FA have submitted their bid together with proof to FIFA. Let FIFA go through it and then judge. For now, all of you that belittle Africa and Africans just shut your traps!!!

  20. Kevin says:

you actually comparing a guy that played in some zambian team to Lionel Messi who has terrorised defences in la liga?? what a joke lionel messi is the worlds best play for a reason la liga is one of the top leagues in the world compared to that little zambian league

  21. G. Chitalu has got a high record. This must be looked at. Lets look at all sides of a coin.

  22. 2night Man U will kick R Madrid at its home ground. Cristiano is good but J. Phill is there to stop him and no body in Madrid will stop star R. V Perse
