Zambia FA: Messi´s record belongs to Chitalu

SoccerNews in La Liga 12 Dec 2012

The Zambian FA has claimed Godfrey Chitalu holds the record for most goals scored in a calendar year, rather than Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

The Argentine netted his 86th goal of 2012 in Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Real Betis at the weekend to break Gerd Muller’s long-standing record, but the African nation’s governing body insists former Kabwe Warriors star scored an impressive 107 goals in 1972.

“We have this record, which has been recorded in Zambian football, but unfortunately it has not been recorded in world football,” a spokesperson told NewsDay Zimbabwe.

“Even as the world has been looking at Lionel Messi’s record, breaking Gerd Muller’s, the debate and discussion back here has been why Godfrey’s goals are not being recognised.

“We have commissioned an independent team locally to go back into the archives and record minute-by-minute each of those goals.

“The team that we have put together is going to calculate all of those goals, recording which ever game or tournament they were scored in.

“We will then send that to CAF and FIFA so that we can show that, while Messi’s record is there, while Muller’s record is there, the actual record holder in terms of goals per calendar year is actually an African, it’s actually Godfrey Chitalu.”

Chitalu died in 1993 when a plane carrying Zambia’s national team crashed.

@Haokip, ever heard the critics say that the 1970 World Cup team for Brazil was called the best squad of all time? And did you know that no other player can even claim to have been on the squad when his country played in- and won- 3 World Cups? No.

And the UCL. .. bull, man, just bull. The World Cup is shorter and therefore more intense, and it consists of 32 teams using the best players they’ve got to win. 7 games against 13, to win the trophy. . . . you can’t even compare it, Haokip.

Funny you should also mention records. . . is that all you got? Name some TROPHIES (aka the real stuff) that Messi helped Argentina win. . . oh wait, NONE. 3 World Cup medals. . . no one in the world who has played in a World Cup or two so far can match that.

You’ll never win. Records, or Trophies? Last time I checked, Trophies were actually tangible (in a literal sense), and your club’s name (and by default, your name with it) go on that trophy. . . FOREVER.
As for records? Someone always comes along to break em. Sometime in the future, a player’s gonna come along and break those records Messi has made for himself. After all, records are meant to be broken, even Pele has said it, but no professional in the world right now stands a chance of equalling- or beating 3 WC medals. Maybe some day from now on. . . but not today.

So what have you got that can stand against silverware, and win?

If its an African its not worth considering.Thats why people dont want to accept that Chitalu really scored the most goals.

Australia scored 32-0 against Samoa, so if Chitalu’s team is challenging the likes of Samoa’s team many times in a year, scoring 107 goals is that easy, maybe can score higher.

  • Incarsus

107 goals in a year? maybe there’s no goalkeeper in Zambia at that time. And it’s just on a minor league, maybe some goals were scored in friendlies.

If winning 3 wc makes pele the best…then his other teammates who also won the wc’s with him should also be considered as the best…besides the champions league is much tougher to win then the wc….and messi already has 2 ucl medals and he alrready broke muller’s record which pele can’t,he already won 2 ballon’d,……..to name a few of messi’s achievements which pele can’t match

  • Haokip

Anik, you didn’t do your homework. He played professional club level and international level, and he had huge success at BOTH levels. Meanwhile, Messi has only done so at club level.

Say what you will about Pele’s teammates, the same can and will be said about Messi’s. They are both the crown jewel on heavily star-studded teams, Messi at Barca, Pele at Brazil. The difference is that Pele performed without all those huge teammates for Santos, and later the NY Cosmos, as well as Brazil, whilst Messi has only performed up to true potential at Barca.

There’s also a matter of the FACTS that Pele helped Brazil win 3 World Cups in his international career, scoring 12 times in 13 matches, but Messi hasn’t even reached a semi-final, and on top of that, he’s only grabbed 1 goal in up to 8 appearances for Argentina in the World Cup.

Now, I believe that Messi can, and eventually will, break Pele’s overall scoring record of 1,283 goals in 1,360-something matches. Records are made to be broken. But he’s not going to win 3 World Cups. Maybe one or two, but not three.

Therefore, there is indeed proof that Pele is the best ever footballer, and Messi is certainly NOT. . . at least for right now, I’ll tell you; he might change that. But he hasn’t yet, and the odds of him succeeding are decreasing by the year.

Now, if you even bother to reply, what will you have to say to even give yourself a fighting chance, given I’ve taken all the facts needed for a nutshell argument and put them at you? What besides the “f you’s” and other insults intended for me and for Pele will you throw at me? I’m waiting.
