(GSM) – Lazio president Claudio Lotito has denied rumors that star Mauro Zárate could soon leave the Italian club.

The 23-year-old former Birmingham City forward has been linked with a return to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly keen on securing his services on deadline day.

However, Lotito denied that Spurs approached Lazio for Zárate, insisting that the Argentine has no problems at Lazio: “There is no Zárate problem at Lazio. The lad is looked after by the club and only needs to focus on playing. As for Tottenham, there were no negotiations for Zárate. The Argentine remains a crucial player for Lazio.”

His agent and brother, Sergio Zárate, also insists the player is happy at Lazio and not thinking of leaving the Italian capital anytime soon.

“I read about Tottenham in the newspapers, but did not hear anything directly,” he told Tuttomercatoweb. “The last time I spoke to Mauro he had no problems. He doesn’t want to leave Lazio, as he has a contract.

“If there was to be a situation where he doesn’t get on with the coach, then clearly he would have to look around at other options, but at this moment in time we are not thinking of leaving Lazio.”
