Zenden impressed by Chelsea strikeforce

SoccerNews in English Premier League 14 Nov 2012

Former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder Boudewijn Zenden believes both teams have progressed in their own unique way this season.

The ex-Dutch international, who managed 42 games in three years at Chelsea, hailed the Blues’ improved attack under Roberto Di Matteo, reserving special praise for Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata.

The trio have combines for 14 goals and 23 assists this campaign and Zenden feels the added creativity from the arrival of Hazard and Oscar has set the side apart from previous ones.

Zenden thinks he would struggle to get near the team nowadays, such is his admiration of the Blues’ attacking threat.

“All three of them are very good, intelligent players,” Zenden said.

“You can see that they really enjoy football. It sounds weird when you say that but they really like playing combination football, playing the through-balls.

“There is lots of creativity in there and they are still very young and have a long way to go.

“It’s good to see that Oscar and Hazard have adapted so quickly to the Premier League because it’s a different league and Chelsea are now playing in a different way – much more attacking, which sometimes means they concede more goals than what they used to do in recent years.”

Having also spent two seasons at Liverpool later in his career, Zenden expects his old side to return to its former glory but urged the club to be patient with new manager Brendan Rodgers.

“I’m sure Liverpool will be back but it is going to take some time. I’ve also heard that Liverpool have started a new project,” he said.

“They have got new players and a new manager, and it will take some time. In the top spheres of football, you don’t really get that time and, nowadays, people want success instantly.”
