Although it’s only one week until the Premier League returns to our TV’s, battles in the MLS are really beginning to heat up as sides in both the Eastern and the Western Conference try to shore up a playoff position. On that note, we have found a handful of MLS tips that can help boost your Sunday acca.

Sunday 5th August

01:00 BST FC Dallas vs San Jose Earthquakes

Starting with Óscar Pareja’s FC Dallas side, despite failing to secure a playoff position last season, The Toros have arguably become the MLS surprise package. Coming off the back of a 3-2 win away at Sporting KC last week, the hosts have now won four of their last six and hold a six-point buffer over Los Angeles FC at the top of the Western Conference. Along with keeping an eye on 27-year-old Michael Barrios who scored a hat-trick against Kansas last time out, it will be Dallas’ defensive record that is most impressing Pareja. Conceding 25 goals in their 21 MLS games, Dallas currently holds the third best defensive record in either conference and will fancy their chances against an Earthquakes side who can’t buy a goal at the moment. With San Jose coming off the back of a 0-0 draw with Real Salt Lake at the Avaya Stadium and along with now failing to win any of their last 14 matches in all competitions, Mikael Stahre’s side have now failed to find the net in any of their last four.

Tip: Home win to nil @ 8/5

01:00 New York City FC vs Vancouver Whitecaps

For New York City FC, after The Sky Blues parted ways Patrick Viera earlier in the year, the hosts turned to former Manchester City coach Domènec Torrent and NYC have only gone from strength to strength. Although they are coming off the back of a 3-1 loss away to Seattle last week, ending their four-match winning run, they have climbed up the East and now sit just four points adrift of Atlanta at the top of the table with one game in hand. Now keeping a clean sheet in four of their last five, it will be their stellar record at Yankee Stadium giving them the most confidence. In fact, along with conceding just one goal at home since April, the hosts are unbeaten in their last 11 matches in New York. As for Carl Robinson’s Vancouver side, although The Whitecaps have now won their last two matches on the bounce, the visitors sit outside of the playoff positions and their form away from the BC Place Stadium has been one of the major problems. Now losing their last four away matches on the bounce, scoring just one goal, they have not won a match on the road since March.

Tip: Home win to nil @ 15/8

02:00 Colorado Rapids vs LA Galaxy

Starting with a revitalized LA Galaxy side, although it has been a difficult 18 months for Sigi Schmid’s side that saw them finish bottom in the West last season, the visitors have battled back and skyrocketed up the table. Now on a six-match unbeaten run, Galaxy currently sit third in the table and a fifth win in six games could see them leapfrog Los Angeles FC. One man in particular to watch is unsurprisingly former Manchester United and PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Along with the 36-year-old scoring a hat-trick in Galaxy’s 4-3 win over Orlando City last week, Ibrahimovic now has 15 for the season and sits second in the MLS goalscoring charts. As for Anthony Hudson’s Colorado side, on paper, this has all the makings of an incredibly difficult afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Coming off the back of a 2-1 loss to fellow strugglers DC United, The Rapids are now winless in the MLS since April and are already 14 points adrift of the playoffs.

Tip: Away win @ 15/8

02:00 Houston Dynamo vs Sporting KC

On paper, this has all the makings of a goal fest at the BBVA Compass Stadium. Two sides that have produced plenty of drama at both ends of the pitch, with Houston coming off the back of a 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers last week, seven of their last 10 matches have now ended with both teams scoring and three or more goals. As for Peter Vermes’ side, although it might be for all the wrong reasons and they will claim some bad luck, while Sporting KC have now scored 11 in their last five and are averaging over two goals per game, The Whites have drastically struggled defensively and losing four of their last five, they have also shipped 16 goals. Backing both teams to score and over 2.5 goals definitely seems like the safest bet here, especially as the last meeting ended in a six-goal thriller.

Tip: Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score @ 10/11
