Massimiliano Allegri feels AC Milan have no chance of winning the Scudetto after their 1-0 defeat to Napoli.

Milan could not get the better of a depleted Napoli team on Monday, with Matteo Politano’s late goal proving decisive.

The Rossoneri were disappointing going forward, creating chances worth just 0.47 expected goals combined.

And with nine points now separating Milan in third from Serie A leaders Inter, with seven games remaining, Allegri has ruled his team out of title contention.

“It was a game with few scoring opportunities, so we felt like one incident would make the difference,” Allegri told DAZN Italia, as quoted by Football Italia.

“Napoli did well to make the most of it, our defence was in position, but we conceded that goal. We should’ve been a bit quicker to finish off attacking moves in the second half, as we hesitated and allowed them to close us down.

“Football is made of these situations, the whole team played pretty well. I thought we recovered the ball three or four times in their half, but made the wrong pass, and that lack of precision is important.

“We absolutely need to improve, we still have some work to do in order to achieve our objective, which is Champions League football.

“The Scudetto race is not for us now, Inter are nine points away and Napoli are ahead now. We need to focus on ourselves, taking it one game at a time.

“We are right now on target for our objective, but it won’t be decided within a week or two, we need to maintain that advantage by trying to win games.”

Opta’s supercomputer backs up Allegri’s assessment, with Milan now winning the title in just 1% of the model’s 10,000 data-led simulations.
