Another Premier League VAR controversy as Southampton get questionable penalty against Brighton (Video)

The use of VAR has been a fiercely contested topic in the Premier League this season, with some decisions given after video review widely regarded as wrong; wrong being a very mild word.

On Monday evening, Southampton beat Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium by 1-2, courtesy of an 81st-minute spot kick by Danny Ings.

With 76 minutes gone, Solly March brought down Kyle Walker-Peters right on the edge of the box as it seemed, and referee David Coote initially gave the visiting team a free-kick. However, VAR intervened and the call was changed to penalty. Have a look and judge for yourselves.

Interestingly enough, Brighton were on the other side of a similar situation in their previous home game, when a last-gasp penalty, also awarded after a VAR review, helped them earn a point against Liverpool as Andy Robertson was judged to have committed a foul on Danny Welbeck.

Welbeck himself described the call as ‘soft’ in his post-match interview.
