Arsenal made their move to try and sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in January, and even though the transfer did not happen then, according to ESPN, they remain confident of completing it this summer.
Arsenal will need to strengthen their midfield ranks this summer. Thomas Partey and Jorginho are both in the final months of contract at the Emirates, and while the Ghanian powerhouse is being linked with a return to Atletico Madrid, the Italy international has struggled with injury problems for a while now, and several Brazilian clubs have been credited with interest in his services.
Meanwhile, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is believed to be a great admirer of Zubimendi, and Andrea Berta, the recently appointed sporting director, agrees that the 26-year-old would be a significant addition.
Arsenal will be aware that they face competition for the signature of Zubimendi, whose contract at Sociedad includes a €60million release clause, from Real Madrid. Los Blancos will be expected to intensify their efforts on that front should Xabi Alonso arrive to replace Carlo Ancelotti in the Santiago Bernabeu dugout, but Arsenal are already in advanced talks to get a deal over the line.
Manchester City and Liverpool have been credited with interest as well.
