Arteta wants Arsenal to keep Luiz

Arsenal signed David Luiz from Chelsea last summer on what was believed to have been a two-season contract, but it has recently emerged that the deal actually expires this year. The club had the option to extend it for another year, which they let expire without acting.

However, reports these days suggest both the player and the club are keen to prolongue their cooperation, and Sky Sports now claim head coach Mikel Arteta has explicitly told the club hierarchy to extend the defender’s contract.

Not so long ago, the 33-year-old Brazilian said he could see himself returning to Benfica one day and possibly finishing his playing career there, which some outlets took as a base to link him to a return to the club he played for between the months of January of 2007 and 2011.

Arteta says he sees the experienced centre-back as a role-model for younger players, and he likes his performances on the pitch as well.
