Aston Villa 0-2 West Ham: Visitors strike late to claim victory

West Ham moved above Liverpool into 10th in the Women’s Super League after claiming a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.

The Hammers sealed back-to-back wins in dramatic fashion, with Riko Ueki and Seraina Piubel on target in the closing stages at Villa Park.

West Ham went into this game already sure of their WSL status for next season, but this win took them to within a point of Villa, who have won just one of their last eight games.

Villa, playing their first league match in 36 days, created the better of the chances, as evidenced by their 1.53 expected goals to West Ham’s 0.84, but could not find a clinical edge.

Instead, West Ham snatched the lead in the 86th minute when a high press forced a turnover, with Ueki then lobbing Sabrina D’Angelo.

Ueki turned provider six minutes later, flicking it onto substitute Piubel, who made no mistake with a composed finish to seal the three points.

Villa attempted 617 passes, which is their highest total in a single match in a WSL game this season, and they managed to translate that possession into five shots on target.

Yet they could not find a way past West Ham goalkeeper Megan Walsh, and her shutout paved the way for Ueki to then do the damage at the other end with her goal and assist.

The Hammers were extremely clinical, too, netting with both of their attempts on target as they claimed their first league win over Villa since 2022, ending a six-game winless run.
