Aston Villa agree Targett deal

Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Matt Targett from Southampton, according to Sam Wallace of the Telegraph.

As the journalist reports, the fee accepted by both clubs is set at £14 million, with the potential of rising to £17 million through add-ons.

The 23-year-old has been a Southampton player since he signed his first professional contract back in 2013. Since then, he has made 61 appearances for the club and scored a single goal, and was named their Young Player of the Year in 2014/15. He spent 2017/18 on loan at Fulham, where he also found a net once, in 21 games.

With Ryan Bertrand holding the left-back spot at St. Mary’s firmly in his hands, Targett is set to leave in search of first-team football, and he will be hoping to get ahead of Neil Taylor in the pecking order at the Villa Park. It is Wallace’s opinion that the deal is a good one for both clubs.
