Atalanta in Skrtel talks

Atalanta are in talks over the possibility of signing Martin Skrtel, according to Sky Sports’ Italian branch.

Having previously played for Trenčin and Zenit Saint Petersburg, the 103 times-capped Slovakia international spent nine years at Liverpool, making 320 appearances in their shirt, scoring 18 goals and winning the 2012 League Cup. The 34-year-old’s contract with Fenerbahce, where he spent the last three years, expired at the end of last season, and apart from talk of an extension with the Turkish side, he has been linked with other clubs across Europe as well. Most notably, a reunion with his former captain Steven Gerrard, now manager at Glasgow Rangers, was mentioned.

Nonetheless, it seems Skrtel could be plying his trade in Serie A soon.

Atalanta, who will be playing in the Champions League for the first time in their history in the upcoming season, are looking to add top-level experience and quality to their back line following the sale of Gianluca Mancini to AS Roma.
