Barcelona have completed and confirmed the signing of Martin Braithwaite from Leganes as an emergency solution for their problems in attack.
With Luis Suarez injured and Ousmane Dembele ruled out for the rest of the season, the Catalan club applied for a special permission to sign a replacement for the Frenchman immediately, which under the rules in Spanish football, they have the right to do. Their application was successful and the permission granted.
The move caused a lot of uproar in Spain. Leganes simply refused to negotiate any deal but Barcelona, being able to make their move, simply activated the release clause in his contract and took the matter out of their hands. It left Leganes in a difficult situation as they unexpectedly lost a key player they never meant to sell, and they will now reportedly apply for the same kind of permission to replace the Denmark international.
Meanwhile, Braithwaite will hope he’ll be able to prove his worth at Camp Nou before the summer, when Barcelona reportedly plan to make their move for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.
