According to Spanish outlet Marca, Barcelona are still hopeful of bringing Neymar back to the Camp Nou from Paris Saint-Germain despite the Brazilian recently stating that contract renewal with the French champions is no longer an issue. However, they are preparing for all possibilities, and are contemplating alternative targets, namely Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund, Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan, and Sergio Aguero who will leave Manchester City as a free agent at the end of the season.
Haaland is one of the hottest prospects in world football right now, with 35 goals from 36 games in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this term so far. His services would likely cost in excess of €100 million this summer, though reports still claim he has a significantly lower release clause kicking in next year. However, the competition for his services is expected to be extremely fierce.
Lautaro was targeted by the Catalan club last summer, but they simply couldn’t afford the €111 million release clause said to be in his contract they were forced to give up for the time being.
Aguero, as a free agent, seems the likeliest option. Not only would they be able to sign him without paying a transfer fee, but at the age of 32, the Argentinian would likely be willing to accept lower wages than the other two targets as well.
