Barcelona want Alvarez as Lewandowski replacement

Robert Lewandowski missed Barcelona’s triumph over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday through a muscle injury, set to keep him out of action for around three weeks. Set to turn 37 this summer, the club are getting grips with the fact that the Poland international might be on his last legs, and according to Marca, they’re considering a swoop for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez to spearhead their attack for years to come.

However, the Barcelona hierarchy are aware of the immensity of the task ahead if they are to press on with this particular idea. Since joining the Rojiblancos from Manchester City last summer, Alvarez has adapted incredibly well to the club and the demands of head coach Diego Simeone, as well as the life in the Spanish capital. The 25-year-old striker is one of Atletico’s greatest assets, and that will only make it harder to strike a deal, along with the potential input from Antoine Griezmann, who returned to the Wanda Metropolitano after an unsuccessful spell at Barcelona.

Alvarez has 27 goals and five assists for Atletico in 50 appearances across all competitions this season.
