Bayern Munich 2-2 Stuttgart: Tel makes history but home side held again

Mathys Tel made history by becoming Bayern Munich’s youngest Bundesliga starter and goalscorer, but the home side were left disappointed after being held for a third league game running in their 2-2 draw with Stuttgart.

Bayern were on course to snap their winless league run when Jamal Musiala restored their lead in Saturday’s contest after Chris Fuhrich had cancelled out Tel’s history-making strike.

But Serhou Guirassy, having already had two goals ruled out and hit the crossbar, converted a 92nd-minute penalty awarded for Matthijs de Ligt’s foul on the visiting forward.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side have now drawn three Bundesliga matches in a row and have won only three of their past nine matches in the competition stretching back into last season.

Tel was one of six players brought into the side by Nagelsmann on the back of their midweek Champions League win over Inter and it took Bayern time to find their flow.

Florian Muller made two saves in quick succession to keep out Serge Gnabry and Tel, but there was no denying the latter shortly after for his historic strike.

Alphonso Davies beat Konstantinos Mavropanos out wide and played in a cross for Tel to drill past Muller from 15 yards.

Stuttgart responded strongly early in the second half and, after having a Guirassy goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up, Fuhrich’s strike was allowed to stand.

The half-time substitute got on the end of a Mavropanos delivery and directed the ball into the far corner to make it goals in back-to-back matches.

Bayern were back in front three minutes later, though, with Musiala curling a delightful finish away from Muller for his fifth goal of the season, having been teed up by Noussair Mazraoui.

Nagelsmann’s side thought they had dodged a couple of late scares as Guirassy rattled the crossbar and then had another goal ruled out, but he eventually found a way through from the penalty spot in added time after De Ligt caught the Guinea international in the box.

What does it mean? Bayern continue to stutter in Bundesliga

With this game falling between big European ties against Inter and Barcelona, Nagelsmann took full advantage of his squad depth by changing more than half of the Bayern side.

That was a risk on the back of a couple of underwhelming league draws, and so it proved as a determined Stuttgart side – without a win to their name this season – took a point.

It means that Bayern have failed to win three games in a row in the first half of a Bundesliga season for the first time since November 2018 under Niko Kovac.

Talented Tel on target

Tel became Bayern’s youngest scorer in all competitions last month when scoring in the DFB-Pokal win over Viktoria Koln and now holds the record in the Bundesliga, too.

Aged 17 years and 136 days, Tel took the record previously held by team-mate Musiala, who was 69 days older when scoring against Schalke two years ago.

Serge shut out by Stuttgart

Gnabry was another of those brought into the side but endured a slightly frustrating day as he failed to find the net from any of his four attempts – no player had more.

That is a far cry from last season when he played a part in six of Bayern’s seven goals against Stuttgart, and those missed opportunities in this latest encounter came back to haunt his side.

What’s next?

Bayern return focus to the Champions League on Tuesday with the visit of Barcelona. Stuttgart host Eintracht Frankfurt on their return to Bundesliga action next Saturday.
