Hoping to widen their buffer at the top of the National League table on Friday night, Notts County will welcome Maidstone to Meadow Lane.
Starting with the hosts, shockingly crashing out of the FA Cup at the hands of lower-league Coalville last weekend, there is no doubt that Notts County will be glad to make a return to National League duties here. Continuing to gain plenty of plaudits from across England’s fifth-tier since opening the 2022/23 campaign, it is no secret that the Magpies have a Football League return at the top of their agenda this season. Opening this weekend’s fixtures holding a one-point buffer over the chasing pack, Luke Williams’ side have won each of their last four National League matchups. With that run highlighted by an eye-catching 1-0 victory against fellow title contenders Wrexham earlier in the month, Notts County will be calling on Cedwyn Scott to spearhead their charge on Friday night. The 23-year-old has now bagged six goals in his last nine appearances, including a brace against Woking last time out.
As for the visitors, while Maidstone might have marked their National League return over the summer, Hakan Hayrettin’s side appear destined for a real relegation scrap this time around. Making the trip to Meadow Lane already sat in the drop zone, the Kent-based outfit will be more than aware that they face a huge task on Friday night. Also crashing out of the FA Cup last weekend after a worrying 1-0 loss away at Needham Market, the Stones are in the midst of a woeful run of form. In fact, Maidstone have now failed to win any of their previous eight straight matchups across all formats – a run that stems back to August 29th. Showing some extended issues at the back and shipping 18 strikes in just their last seven National League appearances, Hayrettin’s downbeat squad are rightfully tipped as a landslide underdog here.
