Competition: Serie B
Market: Sassuolo win
Odds: 1/2 @ Pribet
Two sides who find themselves scrapping it out at opposite ends of the Serie B standings, Sassuolo will welcome Sudtirol to the Mapei Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Starting with the hosts, while Sassuolo might have lost their Serie A status last season, it appears that the Neroverdi are storming their way to an immediate top-flight return in 2025. Last seen marking their return from Italy’s festive break with a stellar 2-1 win away at Salernitana, Fabio Grosso’s men are riding a major wave of momentum. Signing off 2024 with another 2-1 victory against Cosenza, the former Lyon boss will simply be calling on his high-flying squad to lay down another marker on Sunday afternoon. Opening this weekend’s fixtures leading the chase at the top of the Serie B standings, Sassuolo have won nine of their previous 10 showdowns against second-tier opposition. Making a heavyweights statement last month as they stormed their way to a 5-1 romp against Sampdoria, Grosso’s men have also gained a fearsome reputation for their success on home soil. In fact, the Neroverdi have won all of their last seven consecutive appearances at the Map Stadium by an aggregate score of 22-4.
As for the visitors, while some in Sudtirol’s camp might have opened the 2024/25 campaign dreaming of the chance to mount a genuine top-half charge, Fabrizio Castori’s side are in the midst of a real Serie B struggle. Only just about clinging to a 1-1 stalemate at home against Catanzaro last weekend, the Tyroleans are battling it out in the relegation zone. Currently sat five points adrift of safety, the former Carpi boss has a serious job on his hands. In fact, the Whites have recorded just a single victory from any of their previous 13 consecutive Serie B appearances – a rut that stems all the way back to October 6th. Pencilled in as a landslide underdog on Sunday afternoon, Sudtirol should also be concerned by a nightmare record against the leading title contenders. Suffering a 1-0 loss when they welcomed Sassulo to Bolzano for their reverse showdown on November 9th, they have lost all of their last three meetings by an aggregate score of 7-0. Two sides who are scrapping it out at opposite ends of the Serie B standings, we are back a home victory this weekend.
