Competition: Championship

Market: Sunderland win

Odds: 7/10 @ BetUS

Looking to make an immediate return to winning ways on Wednesday night, Sunderland will welcome Luton to the Stadium of Light.

Starting with the hosts, Sunderland might have been frustrated last time out as they eventually had to settle for a 2-2 stalemate against Watford, the Black Cats have continued to gain a string of plaudits from across the Championship. Looking to move within touching distance of the automatic promotion spots, Wednesday’s hosts will be confident of making an immediate return to winning ways here. Getting February underway with a sensational 3-2 victory away at bitter local rivals Middlesbrough, Regis Le Bris should find the mood in his camp at a real high. Pencilled in as a leading play-off contender in 2025, Sunderland are unbeaten in each of their previous seven consecutive Championship appearances. Making another statement on New Year’s Day as they secured a 2-1 win against Sheffield United, the Black Cats will be excited by their recent clinical performances in the final third. In fact, Le Bris’ camp have recorded seven goals in just their last three Championship showdowns.

As for the visitors, although Luton might have opened up the 2024/25 campaign with their sights set on securing an immediate Premier League return, the Hatters have continued to show a string of glaring issues this season. Coming under a huge amount of scrutiny, Matt Bloomfield has a real job on his hands. Remarkably at the heart of a Championship relegation scrap and opening the midweek fixtures sat two points adrift of safety, Wednesday’s guests have failed to win any of their previous nine consecutive appearances across all competitions. Likewise, Luton have put just two points on the board from their last eight Championship showdowns – a rut that stems all the way back to December 20th. It should also be highlighted, the Hatters have gained a major reputation for their glaring struggles away from Kenilworth Road. In fact, Bloomfield’s struggling squad have recorded just a single Championship point on the travels since the middle of September.
