Tim Ream’s agent has confirmed reports that the New York Red Bulls defender is close to joining Premier League side Bolton Wanderers.

Bolton have reportedly made an offer of 2.25 million pounds for the player, who would help fill the gap left by Gary Cahill should he join Chelsea as expected.

“Negotiations between Major League Soccer and Bolton are at an advanced stage and ongoing,” agent Patrick McCabe told Goal.com.

“We hope to have a positive resolution for Tim in the next few days.”

A source close to the player told ESPN earlier that a deal could happen over the weekend.

“There’s not such a big gap between the sides,” said the source.

“There’s been significant progress in the last couple of days. Right now both sides are optimistic. There may be a little movement today. It could potentially be done today but more likely over the weekend.”

Ream, 24, was selected in the second round (18th overall) in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the Red Bulls.

Since then, he has made 58 appearances for the club, scoring one goal. He has also been capped by the US national team seven times since 2010.

Bolton, meanwhile, sit 18th in the table and look set to lose club captain Cahill in the January transfer window.
