BREAKING: Gattuso steps down as Milan head coach

Gennaro Gattuso has confirmed he is stepping down as head coach of AC Milan, according to multiple sources.

The Rossoneri finished fifth in the Serie A table with 68 points to their name, one less than Atalanta and city rivals Inter Milan in third and fourth, respectively. The win away to SPAL in the last round of the season turned out to be in vain, at least when the Champions League qualification is concerned.

Reaching UEFA’s elite club competition was obviously the main objective of the club, and Gattuso seems to be feeling the failure to do so is his.

The former Italy international and 2006 World Cup winner spoke to Repubblica and said he was leaving the club fully aware of the financial downside for him personally, as it meant he is walking away from his contract set to last for further two years, but his relationship with the seven-time Champions League winners was never about the money.

The 41-year-old says this decision wasn’t an easy one, and it came as a result of much thought, a culmination of everything that had been going on for the past 18 months.
