Brentford 2-2 Wolves: Armstrong and Arokodare goals claim comeback draw

Wolves fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Brentford and continue their resurgence at the foot of the Premier League.

Rob Edwards’ team, who lost to Liverpool in the FA Cup in their last outing, went into Monday’s clash at the Gtech Community Stadium on the back of brilliant league wins over the Reds and Aston Villa.

And while they could not take all three points on this occasion, Wolves again showed plenty of fight to hit back and take a point.

Brentford cruised into a controlling lead thanks to Michael Kayode, who headed in his first Premier League goal from a fantastic Keane Lewis-Potter cross, and Igor Thiago’s simple finish.

Thiago, called up by Brazil for the first time earlier in the day, then saw an attempt clip off the woodwork, and Wolves made their reprieve count as Adam Armstrong smashed in to halve the deficit at the other end.

Armstrong struck the post early in the second half, but Wolves’ fightback was complete when, three minutes after coming on from the bench, Tolu Arokodare headed home from Joao Gomes’ delivery.

Arokodare was denied a potential winner by the crossbar moments later, though Brentford, who missed a chance to close to within a point of sixth-place Chelsea, did see Reiss Nelson spurn a huge chance late on as he nodded wide from close range.

Data Debrief: Arokodare’s capital gains

Arokodare has now scored three Premier League goals. All of those have come as a substitute, and all of them came as equalisers against teams from London (Arsenal, Chelsea and Brentford).

His goal owed plenty to Joao Gomes, who, on his 100th league start for Wolves, was hugely impressive. Not only did he provide an assist, he also led the team in duels (12), duels won (seven) and possession won (six).

Wolves have now come back to draw on each of the last two occasions they have found themselves 2+ goals down in a Premier League game (also v Arsenal in February), after losing on each of the previous 22 occasions they were two or more down before that. A testament to the work Edwards has done, even if it may be a case of too little, too late.

Brentford, meanwhile, failed to win a league game after going 2+ goals ahead for the first time in 37 games, since December 2022 against Tottenham (2-2).
