Cavani on Man Utd bench for Chelsea clash

Edinson Cavani was named among Manchester United’s substitutes for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The 33-year-old joined United earlier this month as a free agent, having left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract in June.

He missed last week’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United as he was serving a period of self-isolation in line with coronavirus quarantine rules and was not fit enough to face former club PSG in midweek.

However, Cavani is in contention to make his debut against Chelsea at Old Trafford as United go in search of a third successive top-flight win over the Blues for the first time since September 1965 under Sir Matt Busby.

Should the Uruguayan come on and score, he will become the second oldest ever debutant to net in the Premier League, behind former United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Cavani is joined on the bench by Mason Greenwood, who has been omitted from the last two matchday squads owing to what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described as a “niggle”.

United’s starting XI was the same one that was used against Newcastle last week, with Harry Maguire, Juan Mata and Daniel James returning.

Chelsea, who were winless in their last seven Premier League away matches against United heading into the clash, made one change from their goalless draw with Sevilla.

Mason Mount dropped to the bench and Cesar Azpilicueta returned at the back, with Edouard Mendy continuing to operate in goal after recovering from an injury which kept him out of last week’s 3-3 draw against Southampton.
