Championship: Coventry fight back against Leicester, restore six-point lead at summit

Coventry City strengthened their grip on top spot in the Championship table with a 2-1 comeback win over East Midlands rivals Leicester City.

Having seen Middlesbrough move within three points of the summit with an entertaining 3-2 success over West Brom on Friday, Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues initially threatened to give up ground.

They went 1-0 down to Jordan James’ strike in the 10th minute, which was assisted by a lovely ball around the corner from Bobby De Cordova-Reid.

However, Coventry – who have stumbled several times in recent weeks – got level two minutes into the second half through Ellis Simms, then saw Romain Esse rattle the post.

And substitute Haji Wright completed the turnaround five minutes from time, bundling the loose ball home after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto was denied by Jakub Stolarczyk and restoring Coventry’s six-point lead at the summit.

All the top five were victorious on matchday 27, with third-placed Ipswich Town defeating Blackburn Rovers 3-0 in another of the early kick-offs.

The Tractor Boys were 2-0 up inside 12 minutes thanks to an own goal from Blackburn debutant Eiran Cashin and a strike from Jack Taylor, then Sam Szmodics scored against his former club to put the seal on a win that keeps Ipswich eight points off top spot.

Millwall were also victorious early on, with second-half goals from Femi Azeez and Josh Coburn helping them to a 2-0 triumph at Watford, while Hull City held off a late fightback from Southampton to win 2-1 at St Mary’s.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United had both Djibril Soumare and Japhet Tanganga sent off before half-time and succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic.

Soumare was dismissed for a challenge that led to Harvey Knibbs being carried off on a stretcher, while Tanganga saw red for leading with his elbow on Sonny Carey, who subsequently scored the Addicks’ winner.

Further down the table, Norwich City claimed a massive three points in the relegation battle, beating Wrexham 2-1 in a match that was suspended for around 20 minutes due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

Data Debrief: Rare derby win propels Sky Blues

Coventry’s victory was just their second in their last 10 head-to-head meetings with Leicester, having drawn five and lost three of the previous nine.

The Sky Blues had also won only two of their last eight Championship matches ahead of Saturday’s contest, but they were good value for their victory after firing off 19 shots with an expected goals (xG) value of 2.45, compared to Leicester’s 14 shots and 1.41 xG.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United became the first team to receive multiple red cards in a single Championship game this season, and Charlton only required 59 seconds to break the deadlock at the start of the second half.
