Chelsea suffered a fourth straight Premier League defeat as Manchester United boosted their chances of a top-five finish with a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
Matheus Cunha, from another Bruno Fernandes assist – his 18th in the league this season – struck late in the first half on Saturday, and that goal proved decisive.
A positive Chelsea start did not yield a good chance until Enzo Fernandez, back from his club-enforced suspension, went close just after the half-hour mark.
Then, against the run of play, Fernandes shrugged off former United winger Alejandro Garnacho and supplied a great ball into the box, from which Cunha converted his fifth Premier League goal against Chelsea, more than he has scored against any other team.
Chelsea piled on the pressure in the second half, having 15 shots, but only one of those hit the target, with Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana striking the woodwork.
Fresh from signing a new Chelsea contract this week, Moises Caicedo drilled just wide late on, but United’s depleted defence held firm as the Blues’ miserable run rolled on.

Data Debrief: United on the brink of Champions League return
Having missed out on European qualification altogether last season, enduring their worst-ever Premier League campaign, United are now close to a return to the Champions League.
Their form under Michael Carrick has been generally superb, and the Red Devils bounced back from their surprise loss to Leeds United with a resilient display, which was even more impressive considering the absences of all their senior centre-backs.
Ayden Heaven and makeshift centre-back Noussair Mazraoui put in a fantastic shift, making four and one clearances respectively, while Luke Shaw made a team-leading seven and Diogo Dalot contributed four.
United are now 10 points clear of sixth-place Chelsea and, according to Opta’s supercomputer, have a 98.4% chance of finishing in the Champions League places. Chelsea’s probability of placing in the top five is now down at 8%, after the Blues lost four league games on the spin without scoring for the first time since 1998.
Liam Rosenior’s team finished with 21 shots and 1.55 expected goals (xG) to United’s 0.29, but Senne Lammens was never truly tested.
United’s victory did, though, owe plenty to the brilliance of Fernandes. He is just two assists away from matching the single-season Premier League record of 20, which is shared by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
